Gender Equality

North Carolina is one of the fifteen states that have not ratified the Equal Rights Amendment (Napikoski, n.d.). In the United States, women do not always have the same rights as men, and are treated differently in society. In many cases it will seem as if men have superiority over women. Equality is a necessity for the future of the country to function as well as it does today, and hopefully achieve even greater accomplishments. Gender stereotypes affect the way individuals will feel about their gender, and will lower the expectations they feel that they should follow. Women are expected to stay at home and do housework; but, if they do work outside of the house they are not paid as much money as men. To allow for equality of women the Equal Rights Amendment was proposed to the United States Constitution to guarantee equality for women. “In order to be successful, girls and women have to overcome more obstacles in a variety of different areas simply by virtue of their gender” (Paludi, 2010, p. 28).
“Negative stereotypes based upon gender can also lead to diminished expectations, which can affect people on an individual level: where people expect little for themselves and live up to that expectation” (Paludi, 2010, p. 28). Women will believe that the expectation that stereotypes create for them, will be the expectation they should follow. One stereotype against women is that all they are good for is making food. ...o, or at least have the option to try. Stereotypes will lower the expectations women have for themselves. Men and women should both be paid equally if they are on the same level within their job. If the Equal Rights Amendment was ratified, then it would prove that the country wanted equality. Women should be equal for the sake of the country and the future generations, to allow for great accomplishments to be achieved.
