One hot topic in toys (apart from where and how they are manufactured) is how gender plays a role in them. One Ohio mother, Abi Bechtel, discovered this when she was shopping at Target. There she saw that toy building sets were split up into two categories, “building sets” and “girl building sets”. Upset by this she tweeted an image and contacted the local news station. This action sparks mostly positive response. Most people agreed that this showed gender discrimination. However, some people disagreed with her tweets, saying that “might get more girls building”. Target also responded to her tweets saying that “We know families are tight on time and looking for inspiration, Therefore, we continually explore how to organize our stores and website in ways that will be convenient, appealing and helpful to our guests”. Last semester I did a research paper on gender in toys. Apart from gender oriented colors, boys and men are seen as the default while girls and women are seen as the special category. You could also see it in how toys are advertised. Boy toys are more associated with aggressive and problem-solving, I.E G.I Joe, Transformers, and historically He-Man. While girls are more focused on domestic work and beauty, I.E Barbie, Bratz, Monster High. There is also a social stigma of gender swap toys (boys playing with girl toys and girls playing with boy toys). For example, the fandom of Bronies, older fans of the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. No one would notice this subgroup if it wasn’t for the fact the majority of them are older males. This has led to a backlashed in the internet causing people saying that they are sexual deviants.
