SUMMARY
The Gail Godwin short story, “A Sorrowful Woman” demonstrates the trials and sorrows of how mental illness can affect not only the mentally ill, but also those who live with them.
The woman in this story begins withdrawing more from her husband and son. In doing so, the son is trying to grasp what is wrong with Mommy, while the husband picks up the pieces and tries to find solutions to help the mother cope.
Each solution begins well, but then disturbs the mother further as she continues to withdraw into herself more, until she can no longer continue.
