Did you know Viva La Vida by Coldplay is about the French Revolution? It’s true. The French Revolution was so significant there were songs being made about the event centuries later. The French Revolution took place in France from 1789 to 1799. The people of France revolted against King Louis XVI because France had economic, political, international, and social problems as well as an ineffective ruler. The French government could have done things a lot differently to prevent the revolution from happening. The French government was spending tons of money, and the country was slowly becoming bankrupt. Running the King’s personal court costed too much money. France and the majority of French people were poor. The poor people in France had harder lives than the prisoners of today. The King decided to raise the price of bread to get more money. More people in France became poor and couldn’t afford bread. The French government could have done several things different to prevent the French Revolution from happening. The King could have cut down his expenses instead of raising the price of bread. The King had spent lots of money on himself. He had many people working for him in his personal court. He could have just cut down what he spends at least a little bit. If he had worried more about his country than him living an extravagant life, he could have saved lots of money to spend on resources and supplies. Another thing the government could have done is changing the unfair tax system. The poor people had to pay more taxes than rich people who could afford to pay the taxes. Making poor people pay more money than the rich people makes no sense. Since the Aristocrats had more money, they should have paid the same amount or even more than what the poor people had to pay in taxes. The Aristocrats didn’t do anything either. He didn’t listen to what the majority of people wanted. He ignored them, and that led to the people of France revolting.
King Louis XVI could have done so much more than what he did. If he at least tried to give the majority what they wanted, he might not have been executed. He could have given everyone more equality instead of having the Aristocrats be able to control everything, and the poor people don’t have any power. It’s like he was trying to control the people by telling them they can’t do anything about not having things they need to survive. This is completely absurd, and he should’ve given them some power or inevitably they would revolt.
Hunt also talks about how stubborn the government is. She said government ignore what the vast majority want at their peril. This is what happened with King Louis XVI, he neglected the people in his country. The majority of people were poor, and he should’ve seen this coming.
