Douglass explains within the quote that the fourth of July holiday was not meant for African Americans. During the signing of the declaration of independence slavery was strong and all throughout the thirteen colonies of the United States. Douglass states the hypocrisy of this holiday because the men who wrote the declaration of independence and spoke of liberty and the pursuit of happiness were mostly slave holders.
