The 1931 Frankenstein film by director, James Whale, and the Frankenstein novel by author, Mary Shelley, have an abundance of similarities such as the mood and tone, general plotline, Frankenstein’s desire to kill his creation, and main characters. There are also differences such as characteristics of the monster, the process of its creation, the death of the monster, and supporting characters. Mostly, the movie does not stay true to Mary Shelley’s novel. The 1931 film by Whale has the same eerie, gothic, and dark mood and tone as the novel by Shelley. For example, both works contain stormy weather as a constant throughout which further sets the dark and terrifying mood. The stormy and dark weather also foreshadows and represents the evil coming. This being that Frankenstein creates a monster from dead body parts and Frankenstein is so terrified of his ugly creation that he abandons his creation; the monster then kills many people, especially those that Frankenstein loves. Frankenstein has a burning desire to destroy his creation for all the harm and damage it has caused to his life. The main characters in the film and the novel are consistent with the movie. There are many differences between Whale’s film and Shelley’s novel. The monster’s features in the film do not stay true to how Shelley described it. In the novel, the monster is described as an 8 foot tall creature, yellow due to jaundice, has long black hair, black lips, and sharp white teeth. In the movie, the monster is portrayed with bolts in his neck, green, and short hair. The monster’s actions do not match up either. In the novel, the monster is capable of learning, speaking, and being literate. He has morals and does not become malicious until he experiences so much hatred and declares war on mankind. In the film, he is illiterate and not capable of learning; he is not even able to speak
