Prior to the Election of 1796, political candidates at the local, state, and national level did not run for office as members of organized political parties. It was during the Election of 1796, in which political parties that hold firm political principles were established. The formation of these organized political parties laid the foundation for the two main current political parties which are Democrats and Republicans. In addition to political parties, there are also political ideologies which refer to a belief in which how the government should function within a society. Political ideologies are more extreme than political parties falling on the ends of the political spectrum with “extreme” meaning that less people hold those views. Political ideologies express more of a worldview of economic, social, and political issues. There are two main political ideologies which are Liberal and Conservative that fall on opposite ends of the political spectrum. The Liberal ideology believes that it is necessary for government to act more for its people in order to help both society and people function and thrive. Liberals criticize economic and social inequality and believe that equal opportunity is vital. Liberals hold that discriminatory practices need to be discarded and the outcomes of great equalities of wealth need to be decreased. In order to fulfill their desires for equality and opportunity, Liberals believe that it is the responsibility of the government to create public policies that get rid of the inequalities in society while protecting civil liberties, human rights, and individual rights. …show more content…

One political issue is abortion which is “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy” according to the Merriam Webster dictionary. The ideological perspective on abortion from the Liberal and Conservative ideologies are vastly different. The Liberal position on abortion starts with the idea that a fetus is not a human life therefore it does not have separate individual rights. The Liberal ideology holds to the idea that the right to have an abortion is a woman’s choice regarding her body and the government should not be involved in that decision, but should protect the woman’s choice to have an abortion if that is what she decides. On the other hand, the Conservative ideology holds to the idea that human life begins at conception and therefore abortion is the murder of a human being and nobody has the right to do that. The Conservative ideology also states that an unborn baby which is still a living human being has rights which are separate from those of its mother. In addition to the Liberal and Conservative ideologies on abortion, there is also the position of the political parties on the issues. Republicans position on abortion is that the human life is sacred and declares that “the unborn child has a fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed.” In addition
