For much of American history, political parties have played a prominent role in the United States government. Many people wonder whether or not this is favorable for The United States. Many say that political parties divide and are too constricting, while others say that political parties fulfill a necessary role in government. Either way, political parties in America go back a long way and have been very influential in American history. Political parties have their positives and their negatives, but they are ingrained in American society and are going nowhere soon.
Political Parties have been an integral part of country and divided the country since their birth. Political parties in the United States began in the late 1700’s into the early 1800’s when Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were debating the strength of the central government for the new nations. Hamilton believed in a strong central government, and those that followed him formed a party called the Federalists. Jefferson advocated for a weak central government, and him and his followers founded the Democratic-Republican Party. Both Hamilton and Jefferson were against the idea of political parties but their strong, differing views forced them into the creation of their respective parties (Flanders). Hamilton and Jefferson’s creation of their political parties led to a split among the nation, ultimately leading to the Civil War. The parties were helpful, in that they gave people an entity to rally their idea behind, they were also harmful as they split the nation and set specific ideas for people to live by. Political parties have long been ingrained in the American culture and they have been beneficial and they have been hurtful. They have their haters and they have their supporters. While they divide people and lead to selfish actions which do not benefit the country, they also offer differing opinions, different viewpoints, and checks to the other party. A third major party could be beneficial but has yet to work in American history. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the idea of political parties, but one part is for sure, they are not going anywhere anytime soon and people need to get used to them.
