Female genital mutilation is a very disturbing act that we must eliminate; even if will have to pull this bull by its horns. According to Sarah Boseley health editor at World Health Organization explains, female genital mutilation is a procedure that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Sadly, this act is recognized as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. In addition, as per World Health Organization, this practice is mostly carried out by traditional circumcisers, who often play other central roles in communities, such as attending childbirths (Mutilation). To others this is a social convention; the social pressure to conform to what others do and have been doing. This is also accompanied by the need to be accepted socially and the fear of being rejected by the community, are strong motivations to perpetuate the practice (Cutting). In some communities, female genital mutilation is almost universally exercised and yet this devastating act goes unquestioned. It is often considered a necessary part of raising a girl, and therefore considered as a rite of passage to prepare her for adulthood and marriage. Most communities endorse this act because it aims to ensure premarital virginity and marital fidelity. They believe that; “when a vaginal opening is covered, or narrowed by infibulation, the fear of the pain of opening it, and the fear that this will be found out, is expected to further discourage extramarital sexual intercourse among women with this type circumcision” (Cutting). Communities and ethnic groups that practice this disturbing act believe that being cut increases marriageability, and it is more likely to be performed. Equally important, the community should be involved in fighting female circumcision by educating individual in the community. Local women should be engaged to teach other girls and women in their communities about the adverse effects of female circumcision. The programs and the leaders of organizations should approach this issue respectfully when educating such communities to prevent a revolution. Once the communities are made known to its dangers, the country must make and implement laws against female genital mutilation. Although female genital mutilation is illegal in most countries around the world, including many of the countries in which FGC is regularly practiced. Recent research shows that these efforts may be working. In some regions, education is changing attitudes and influencing a family's choice to have female circumcision performed (Cutting) Conclusively, female genital mutilation is a vice which does not have any health benefits; only through a united effort can we drain this distressing practice from this
