Nowadays, each country has access to the Internet. Social networking websites are the most common websites that are currently visited by people. Among these is Facebook, which many would argue is the most-used social networking site of all. Also, because of the rise in popularity of phones with Internet access, Facebook has become extremely accessible. The largest group of Facebook users is college students who are between 18-26 years old. Facebook has affected the academic performance of these students either positively or negatively.
Facebook has positive impacts on students’ performance in the academic life. For instance, it gives the students a sense of flexibility. College students are one of the major groups of people who face stress in work. This kind of depression can be recovered through using Facebook. If the student feels uncomfortable after studying for a long time, for example, three hours, then he logs in to Facebook for fifteen minutes, his mind may think more clearly when he returns to studying, because humans need a mental break after doing something stressful. In addition, Facebook can be an environment that gives students a somewhat comfortable feeling because of its activities, like playing games with friends, creating new friendships, and communicating with others, even if they are far from each other. To expand on this, Facebook is considered a social environment because of its ability to create new friendships. Facebook notifications help us receive comments that give us a positive feeling of support after any post; moreover, we can get corrections when posting something grammatically correct.

It influences college students especially, since they are the largest age group who uses the website. Facebook was created to help college students connect with and help one another, but it is not usually used for that purpose. Its non-academic, purely entertaining use takes away from the little time college students already have for studying. Although there are many advantages to using Facebook, like giving students a sense of flexibility and sometimes improving their confidence, yet research suggests that overall its impacts on the academic performance of college students is negatively more. In addition, it can leading to emotional problems, which result from cyber-bullying. All in all, Facebook wastes college students’ precious time and it is unnecessary.
