[A]“Hope is the thing with feathers,” wrote Emily Dickinson. [B] But she is not the only one to show hope in a unique way. Movies like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and books like Of Mice and Men and the inspiring documentary War Dance shows hope and the effects of hope in `many different ways. [C] Without hope, none of the examples would exist, as the stories wouldn't have gone on. [D] Hope, dreams and goals provide people with something to look forward to and to work for in life, in other words, something to live for.

[G] In the article “The Will and Ways of hope, part of it talks about the concept of hope, which basically is “...hope involves the will to get there, and different ways to get there” (Kaufman). [H] This is shown to be true in the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, when Walter imagines the woman he likes, Sheryl, playing the guitar and singing Major Tom to encourage him. [I] Because of this, he is able to gather courage to get on a helicopter with a drunk guy to get one step closer to achieving his goal. [J] Achieving our goals can give us hope as well. [K] In the article “How we Lose Hope and How to Get it Back, it talks about how to get hope, or feel hope; “a major factor that contributes to our level of hope is the achievement of our goals”(Wilner). [L] When Walter daydreams about Sheryl and gets on the helicopter, he has accomplished a small goal -- getting closer to the photographer he is trying to find. [M] Because of this, Walter feels hopeful toward finding the photographer. [H] In the documentary War Dance, the children, despite being surrounded by war, have hope that keeps them going. [I] This is that they are going to a big music competition, and they hope to win and show everyone that they aren`t rebels or just kids who hide, but they are just like everyone else and can be talented too. [J] Because of this, the kids work hard toward their goals, in hopes of achieving them. [K] The article, while talking about how to renew hope, also mentions that ¨When we are able to reach our goals and have a sense of support and validation it instills hope¨(Wilmer). [L] When the team of kids participating in the music competition is able to go to their national/regional competition, the kids gain a sense of hope from being recognized as a group of very talented people. [M] This newfound hope provides them with the willpower to keep on living and practicing their music.
