Ophelia and Hamlet’s Mental State The complicate love lives of Ophelia and Hamlet drive them to the result of insanity. Being that the two are fairly young, the obstacles they go through could drive anyone to insanity. Contrarily, Ophelia and Hamlet’s mental state have the ability to be contracted by Ophelia’s insanity, Hamlet’s insanity and their combined mental states helped with the development of the plot. Ophelia is an underestimated character. She goes through an emotional roller coaster with Hamlet, in addition to the death of her father at the same time. She hided her true emotions and true love for and from Hamlet, which possible causes her meltdown in the end. Ophelia’s insanity starts to show when she hands Gertrude and Claudius the flowers she picks “hers rue for you — it symbolized repentance” (251). Throughout the story Hamlet’s emotion is hard to read. Hamlets father is murdered which begins his insanity. Hamlet sees the ghost of his father and starts to prove his insanity, “oh you villain, villain, you damned, smiling villain” (67). In this moment Hamlet figures out who murdered his father. Hamlets mental state originally begins in this very moment. Hamlet seeks revenge, “Had Hamlet not loved and honored his late father, for example, he would not have been powerful pressed to avenge his death” (Bloom 2010). This statement is relevant because the love Hamlet had for his father is what causes his mental insanity. Moreover, the death of Ophelia is what broke him. Hamlet does not control his emotions, but the moment Ophelia passed, he states to express his love. Hamlets strength determination, and courage are all examples of what keeps Hamlet’s insanity under wraps, until the love of his life takes her own
