Religion in Media
Has media affected the way people see religion as a whole? By the way stereotypes or biases are portrayed to someone, by watching a movie; a documentary, reading a book, and even watching a TV show. People as a whole don’t do a lot of research on the stuff they hear or see they just go on believing what they see or hear is true. Most of the stuff people watch or listen to have bias and a lot of stereotypes. I am going to speak on how movies have affected our perspective on Catholicism, Buddhism, and Atheist. Catholicism has been ridiculed in many ways; the majority of forms that it’s being ridiculed are by movies like the movie A Haunted House 1-2. Buddhism is another religion that is portrayed in movies but it’s not as much poking fun at Buddhism than there is of Catholicism, the movie that’s going to represent Buddhism is Little Buddha. Finally, I do think religion has been affected by the way its presented in Media especially in movies because of all the stereotypes and bias that are portrayed. So if you don’t want base your knowledge on biases and stereotypes you have to open up a book and read or watch a documentary on how that particular actually is not on how Hollywood has portrayed the religion. Hollywood is known for twisting information to make an interesting movie, because its all about profit in Hollywood. Hopefully I’ve covered all I said was on Catholicism, Buddhism, and Atheism and how media is creating bias on each one of these religions, some of these biases might be true but you wont know if you don’t read or watch the information that will get you out of any doubt.

Millions of American’s have found themselves near-obsessed with the engrossing epic Lord of the Rings, Dogma has been welcomed into the Cult Films Hall of Fame, and Mel Gibson’s The Passion stirred an overwhelming amount of religious, cultural, and ethnic criticism. When looking at the recent array of films that either present or suggest religious themes – whether it be allegorically, evangelically, or satirically – we find ourselves asking the question “why now?” Is the reason for this upsurge sociological, psychological, philosophical, or historical? Is there perhaps a political or economic reason as to why American’s today are so eagerly consuming films that are looking at the timeless battle between good & evil, questioning organized belief systems, or presenting religion in new and contemporary ways? From critical analysis and research done on this subject, as well as much pondering and theorizing, it could be said that the question of “why now” is more philosophical, and value oriented, than anything else.
