Recently, the topic of whether or not college athletes should be paid has been a trending topic in the sports industry. One side of the argument is that the NCAA is making millions of dollars at sporting events hosted by these athletes, and the athletes don’t get any of it. This is a valid argument because the athletes are dedicated, hard-working students that spend many hours training and practicing, and they are representing their universities. However, opposing arguments are claiming that since college athletes already receive full scholarships, they shouldn’t be paid extra, especially because they are students first, and athletes second. One reason why college athletes should be paid is because they spend an average of 40 hours a week practicing and training, and they don’t have enough time to get a full-time job. When students first graduate from college and are finally living on their own, they must be able to start a career and manage their financial plans wisely. However, many athletes are not able to do this so easily. According to a recent report published by the NCAA, about 60% of NBA players are broke just five years after retirement (Patterson). Most of the time, however, financial failure is blamed on the athletes trusting corrupt financial advisors, and lavish spendings (Patterson). This means that since athletes have not been paid or had time to get a job, they have no idea how to make smart decisions when it comes to finances. Also, when the student athletes are being paid, they aren’t as stressed about how they will be able to afford food and other necessities, and when they are less stressed, they typically get better
