I choose to enroll in the Social and Welfare law unit in order to develop a deeper and greater understanding about community legal centers as well as the services provided by them.

One particular area that I found most interesting was the support for refugees that the Humanitarian Centre provides for people who have been displaced from their countries such as Somalia, Burma, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and more recently, Syria. I feel that many people in Australia have the misconception that refugees do not deserve rights or our help, mainly because of the inability to understand the surrounding circumstances that made them leave their home country although they did nothing wrong. These people more often than not sadly were displaced due to religious conflicts, oppressive governments, or invasion by another country.

Emotions, stress levels, and tensions to do with frustrations would need to be considered and monitored at all times to reduce the risk of Post Traumatic Stress leading to more serious mental conditions for the refugees. Much support is needed to help the families adjust to living in Australia.

In some countries like Sri Lanka, there is a long history of practicing the Caste system. To this day, 90% of the population still recognizes this system . As Australia does not practice this system, it is important to recognize that it exists and the rarefactions that stem from it so as to not offend or have a situation arise that is not accepted as part of the Australian legal
