Over 315,000 young people were served by the Children’s Advocacy Centers around the United States in 2014. Among these children, 60,897 reported physical abuse. Every child responds to abuse in a personalized way, but recently, researchers have been examining the link between domestic abuse and conduct disorder. Whether the abuse is experienced or witnessed, it affects today’s youth just the same. Domestic child abuse and exposure to domestic abuse causes conduct disorder in youth which is predominantly displayed though animal abuse. A child’s abuse of an animal could be a predecessor of a violent future.

Ascione said, “In a climate of pervasive terror, the roots of human empathy may wither and die, or fail to develop at all.” Children raised in violent homes may blunt or diminish their emotional responses to trauma as an adaptation. These emotional responses are often referred to as empathy. Webster defines empathy as, “the feeling that you understand and share another person’s experiences and emotions; the ability to share someone else’s feelings”. However, this specific study focuses on cognitive empathy, which is an intellectual understanding of another’s experience. In terms of cognitive empathy (and other emotions) it becomes a use it or lose it situation. This is when children do not exercise their “I feel bad about doing this” feelings so they weaken. The Hartman et al study states that lower levels of cognitive empathy predict animal abuse in children. Think about it in Grinch terms. His heart gets smaller the less and less he uses it. While lower levels of cognitive empathy are a predictor, so are high CU trait scores. CU traits are callous-unemotional trails which exemplify lack of empathy, guilt, and regard for others. Justin Torres Novel We the Animals is a story about three brothers who lived a harassed childhood life. There parents are both young and have no permanent jobs to support their family. The narrator and his brothers are delinquents who are mostly outside, causing trouble, causing and getting involved in a lot of problems and barely attending school, which their parents allowed them to do. The narrator and his brothers were physically abused by their father, leading them to become more violent to one another and others, drinking alcohol and dropping out of school. Physical abuse is an abuse involving one person’s intention to cause feelings of pain, injury and other physical suffering and bodily harm to the victim. Children are more sensitive to physical abuse, they show symptoms of physical abuse in short run and more effects in the long run. Children who sustain physical abuse grow up with severely damaged of sense of self and inability. The narrator and his brothers were physically abused by their father and showed long run symptoms of Antisocial behaviors, drinking problems and most importantly they becoming more violent themselves. Psychopathy has fascinated the public for years due to the gruesome and evil portrayal it has received in the media. Psychopathy is defined in the DSM-III as a personality disorder characterized by enduring antisocial behavior, diminished empathy and remorse, and disinhibited or bold behavior (Patrick, Christopher, Fowles, Krueger, Rober, 2009). Psychopathy represents a cluster of different dimensions of personality found amongst the general population to varying degrees (Patrick et al, 2009). The diagnostic definition is meant to be applied to adults, however psychopathology can occur in children. Controversy surrounds the topic of childhood mental illness because the brain is not fully developed until the age of 18; thus allowing the possibility that symptoms are the result of growing up and will change. The triarchic model, formulated by Christopher J. Patrick, is the most commonly used model in diagnosing adult and childhood psychopathy. This model suggests that different conceptions of psychopathy emphasize three observable characteristics to varying degrees; boldness, disinhibition and meanness (Patrick, et al, 2009). Boldness is the first observable characteristic and is comprised of low fear including stress-tolerance, toleration of unfamiliarity and danger, and high self-confidence and social assertiveness. Disinhibition; characterized by poor impulse control including problems with planning and foresight, lacking affect and urge control, demand for immediate gratification, and poor behavioral restraints. According to Arianna Huffington in the article “Empathy: What We Need Now”, during hardships and instability of society, empathy is needed to find solutions to those issues. Huffington writes about how empathy is needed in our country in order to produce a positive social change. She begins by giving an example of a movement that Martin Luther King created and how empathy was a part of this movement. King as well spoke of how empathy is the sign of living. To become involved in the situations of humanity in order to improve it, displays that empathy is the core of a human’s existence. After reading this article, I do agree with Huffington about how individuals need to fully understand and put themselves within the situation to fully comprehend the issue to solve.

Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner provides incredibly valuable insight into the intertwining concepts of identity and personal happiness, as does A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews. Undeniably, a healthy cognisance of personal identity is crucial to mental tranquility and happiness. Insecurity, for example is unilaterally viewed as an unsettling character flaw precisely because of the inherent implication of untrue personal identity. Accurately understanding one’s true personal identity is the backbone of happiness, as seen in The Kite Runner and A Complicated Kindness. Furthermore, it can be said that personal flaws, strengths and collectivist mentalities surrounding both Amir and Nomi’s characters ultimately contribute to their respective happiness or lack thereof, at the end of both stories.

Children are usually known for their innocence and happiness but this is not always the case for every child. The environment a child grows up in affects them for the rest of their life. Dr. Ken Magid, a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of severely abused children, says in Child of Rage, “These children have been so traumatized in the first years of life that they cannot form a bond with other people. Aim of this paper is to examine and present the application of social cognition models in the prediction and alternation of health behavior. Social cognition models are used in health practices in order to prevent illness or even improve the health state of the individuals in interest, and protect their possibly current healthy state. This essay is an evaluation of the social cognition models when used to health behaviors. Unfortunately it is impossible to discuss extensively all the models and for this reason we will analyze three of the most representative cognitive models to present an integrated idea of their application.
Seeing maimed animals are not pleasant images. Those images sometimes appear across computer and television screens. The advocacy groups who place these images in the public’s view are trying to jolt people into the realization that abuse exists. For every ten seconds that goes by an animal is getting abused (“Animal… Statistics”). One statistic states that “71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32% reported their children had hurt or killed animals” (“Animal… Violence”). Factors that contribute to child abuse and neglect includes poverty, divorce, substance use, lack of education, stress due to unemployment, mental health issues, teenage parent, and a history of child abuse in the family. It took decades for physicians to conclude that parents have been violently assaulting their children. A child exposed to violence at an early age causes many different effects psychologically, physically and emotionally. From short term effects to long term affects these problems may or may not be reversible. It’s important for families to provide the proper love and care for children as they enter the most important stages of the developmental period of their life. According to the National Center for Children Exposed to Violence, current estimates indicate that as many as ten million children per year may witness victims of violence in their homes or that children in communities across the United States are witness to violence at alarmingly high rates (Edelson). Violence is seen every day from children whether it takes place in the community, at school, video games, movies, and more seriously cases, their own household. Violence affects children during child growth as it puts stress on a child, and can even seriously physically or mentality harm the child.
