To understand how culture affects our understanding of biographical characteristics, we first have to understand what biographical characteristics are. Biographical characteristics are personal characteristics that include age, gender, race, disability, and length of tenure (Robbins & Judge, 2015). These characteristics are considered surface level characteristics and are easily obtained from personnel records (Robbins & Judge, 2015). These biographical characteristics can be a cause of discrimination just by looking at them. Looking at each one of these characteristics shows how culture affects the understanding of biographical characteristics and abilities (The Future, 1991).

When looking at the manager position, more than just technical skills are needed to be successful. In the manager position good communication skills are also extremely important (Robbins & Judge, 2015). According to the video in the year 2000 many workers will have limited verbal and writing skills causing them to no be successful in the workplace (The Future, 1991). A way to improve the education level is to encourage women and minorities to pursue math and science skills (The Future, 1991). Surface level diversity is what most demographics reflect and defined differences in easily perceived characteristics (Robbin & Judge. 2015). While deep-level diversity is defined as differences in values, personality, and work preferences that become progressively more important for determining similarity as people get to know each other (Robbin & Judge, 2015). A good example of deep-level diversity is two new employees starting work at a new job that may have judged each other when they first saw each other, but end up learning more about each other through further conversations at work. I suppose many of us would stumble on the question. In fact, it is really very difficult to define Personality in the real sense. Day and night, we see people all around us. We meet them; we talk to them; we discuss with them and share our feelings with many of them. But in spite of all these we sometimes fail to judge the personality of the person right in front of us.
In the day to day life, experiences and connections are made. Many things that occur in one’s life can all stem from their individual personality, but interpreting how one’s personality guides their life presents a difficult challenge. Many actions, quirks, and patterns that a person has are easily noted due to the ability to see it, but the puppeteer behind these habits is an individual’s personality. A certain personality type can affect the perception of certain events and the reactions/feelings to certain outcomes. While one person might see a situation as dreadful, another may see it entirely different. We tend to find ourselves side by side with people we see similarities between due to a parallel in certain traits, but no two individuals are exactly the same based on differences in personality. I chose to take a self-objective personality assessment on Outofservice.com to analyze my own personality traits. A series of 60 questions were asked for to me to rate my behavior a scale of 1 through 5 to determine my personality. Questions ranged from, how I am at parties to how much I care for others. The website uses the Five-Factor Model to understand the way people’s personalities differ from one another’s, the same model used in general psychology. I was given a percent and a brief description on my behavior in the traits of Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. It should be expected that every individual is unique in his or her own experiences, views, beliefs philosophies and ideologies. Fortunately, these distinctive differences that have become a driving force for change and acceptance in the workplace environment. “Workforce diversity acknowledges the reality that people differ in many ways, visible or invisible, [by] age, gender, marital status, social status, disability, sexual orientation, religion, personality, ethnicity and culture (Shen, Chanda, D’Netto, & Monga, 2009, p. 235). Support of individuals’ unique differences has assisted organizations in creating a business culture, which allows its workforce to thrive. In this essay I will describe the four major theories of personality and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each. The first major theory of personality is psychodynamic which was created by Sigmund Freud. The second major theory of personality is trait or five-factor model which is the most scientifically supported model. The third major theory of personality is humanistic, and Carl Rogers was the best known humanistic theorist. Finally, the fourth major theory of personality is social cognitive which was developed by social learning theorists.

In general, diversity is often only related with differences in race and gender. In actuality, numerous elements can determine diversification in the workplace. Elements such as skills, abilities, experience, values, age, and education could be part of a diverse footprint in an organization. Other important attributes related to diversity include disabilities, religion, sexual orientation, and marital status (Guillame et al., 2013). The adoption of diversity in the workplace has the potential to increase organizational effectiveness in many ways.
