Do you look at the Australian flag with pride? Well, the Australian flag has many people split on changing the flag. I feel as though many don’t have the connection to the flag. It doesn’t tell the story of the nation. Our flag is what brings us Australians together, it needs to represent our country with pride, but the current flag doesn’t do our country any justice. The current flag doesn’t represent any of our indigenous culture, the true custodians of this land. As well as that, have you ever confused the Australian flag with the New Zealand flag? This is another issue, many get confused as they are almost identical. Another issue it that the current flag doesn’t reflect our sporting colours, as we play in green and gold but these colours aren’t demonstrated on the flag. This a disgrace as they are the true custodians of this land. We need to respect their land and show this in our flag, as the flag makes up who we are in the nation. Without this representation on our flag our uniqueness in the flag doesn’t demonstrate who we are in the nation. The union jack is out of date and doesn’t adequately express what makes us Australian, the past is the past and now it’s time to move and make us who we are in the world. Many say the flag shouldn’t be changed as many have fought and dies under the Australian flag, but in fact the flag was only declared official flag in until 1953, and they did not fight for the flag, they fought for the freedom and democracy for the nation, the flag. As a matter of fact, the red ensign was used for Anzac parades, this tells us many Australians have fought with different flags such as the union jack and the red ensign. To conclude, we should create a flag with our indigenous culture and as well as getting rid of the union
