Have you ever believed that Betsy Ross designed the first flag of the United States? Well, that old childhood tale is false and a congressman names Francis Hopkinson created the first flag. The flag is an emblem of the U.S and shall never be disrespected. The flag, for some people, can just mean a piece of fabric, but for others the flag symbolizes much much more.

That was a childhood story that many people heard and believed. She was a seamstress in Philadelphia. In 1776, apparently George Washington had personally asked Miss Ross to design and make the first flag. That was a myth. Her grandson had told stories of how Betsy had created the flag. Although, Miss Ross had made a flag for the government it wasn’t the very first flag. People were mistaken when they believed the first flag because the flag she did design was a famous flag. Her flag had thirteen stripes and thirteen stars in a circular formation. This is a famous flag that first appeared in the 1970s and is very well-known. Some people ask who built and designed the very first flag of the United States. Well, Francis Hopkinson had built and designed the first flag. He was a congressman. He also helped build the Great Seal. Francis Hopkinson had an idea about designing a flag and he wanted to be to build something about building a symbol for the United States. They were needed because of the conditions. When a new state joins the Union, then a star was added. When the first flag was created in June 14, 1777, with thirteen stripes alternating of red and white. The flag had thirteen white stars in the upper left hand corner on a navy blue background. The specific colors and design symbolize our nation as united. The first flag of the United States lasted a total of eighteen years. So, after the original flag, there was some fixes and changes. The first change was on January 13, 1974 because two stars were added to the flag. One star equaled one state, so that is the reason for so many alterations. On June 24, 1912, there was a new format so the flag would be proportional with one another. The president wanted the flag to be perfect and straight. Each star shall of the point facing upwards. The president at the time was President Taft. The President wanted the flag to be aligned perfectly and straight so this alterations were necessary. A lot of of the other alterations, although, weren’t because there was a problem, but new states were added to the Union. In conclusion I chose Betsy Ross thinking of an all American woman who made America’s first flag. Little did I realize I was going to be learning so much more beyond a woman who created the first flag for our country. Betsy Ross was a strong independent woman and a great leader and role model for girls today. Betsy faced many different tragedies but still accomplished amazing things. She is known know all across the world for the first flag but her story is much more than that.
Each one came from eleven different colonies to change the Articles of Confederation because it wasn't working out. The states had too much power and the national government have little to none of the power. There was no army or taxes. They needed to change it so the nation could stay together and not fall apart. So they made the Constitution. The constitution protected America by, Federalism, Separation of Powers and checks and balances.Federalism helps protect America from tyranny. Have you ever heard the saying, "Don't judge a book by it's cover"? There are many things that look very unpleasing on the outside but actually have a meaning bigger than just our lives. Something that has a special meaning to me is the American Flag. Imagine a dirty, old flag that is still standing after a war that many soldiers have lost their life for. Thinking about that gives the flag a bigger meaning than just old cloth. The flag stands for all of Americans loyalty to their country. It also represents the hardships our country has overcome over many decades. The American Flag stands for everybody that has fought and died for our country.
