Alcohol and its effect on athletes Alcohol consumption among students in high school and college has become a major issue in the United States, specifically among college students (Addiction among High School and College Students). Glorified by the media in popular television shows and movies, alcohol consumption has become a social norm for young adults. Binge drinking of alcohol has also become an issue among college students, and athletes are fifty percent more likely to binge drink compared to the regular student (Nelson, Wechsler 2001). Alcohol is the most common drug used by athletes and may become addictive (Nelson, Wechsler 2001). Background: Alcohol is becoming more and more of a social normality in today’s society. Normalized by media outlet such as television and movies. About 70 percent of young adults consume alcohol and that number continues to rise. Many coaches, community leaders, and teachers have identified this as a major problem amongst our youth of today. Athletes, more than young adults who do not participate in athletics, are more likely to become addicted or binge drink alcohol. Athletics requires skill, both mentally and physically, as well as athletic ability and a well conditioned body. These characteristics are needed to excel in any athletic event, and as our society puts more pressure on athletes to become the best, it may be a great way to stop young people from consuming alcohol. …show more content…
