Freshman’s can be social outcasts due to lack of confidence. Which can be understandable when being aware of the fact that they are surrounded by much older students that happen to have more experience in their personal lives. An online source stated that,” For the first few weeks of freshman year, high school might seem like a foreign land with intimidating upperclassmen stalking the halls.” (Coldiron, High School Myths Debunked: Fact vs. Fiction for Freshmen). Assuming that in high school, freshman love to read books and spend time with the teacher during lunch. Constantly doing a massive amount of homework and having to make sure that the stuff is turned in on time. This can be a stereotype of high school freshman nerds or even geeks because that is what society recognizes when look at the performance. Not all freshmen 's are the same, but when creating a stereotype is based on the majority of what the group does, says and wears. High school freshman’s can be distinguished as students that may have the worse acne than the upper class men, or the most annoying students who do the greatest childish things. Maybe the freshman 's who are cocky and think that they are the best looking kids in the whole wide world.

Have you ever felt like an outcast? Have you ever felt like everyone around you thinks you’re insane? Do you ever get that feeling that your difference from everyone else is a brand on your forehead or a stain in your clothes that won’t come out? In her novel, Their Friend Scarlet, Victoria Kahler says, “She felt just like that girl in that book with the letter A on her chest. Only her A signified Alone. She was an outcast, cast out by her own choices, an outsider with a pretty face. Like a rose, she may have been beautiful to look at, but almost everyone only knew the thorny side,” (“Quotes About Outcast”). Everyone wears a letter on their chest. It is something that distinguishes him or her from every other person. Unfortunately, more times than not, the discovery of this difference hits the wrong chord with society and the dissonance creates a fissure between him and society. To put it another way, differences between people in society creates outcasts. But just because you are ostracized does not mean that you can just give up. A whole new world can be created from an idea.

The book starts off with Eric, a fourteen year old boy, who has recently made a big move from California to Utah with his parents and younger brother Joel, who is ten. The book starts in October of 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Eric struggles trying to figure out who he is but also has to figure out what is the right thing to do when it comes to protecting someone he loves. Eric still being fairly young has been forced to find himself while hiding Grace, a runaway girl who he just happened to find one night, while at work.
The subject of “Strangers Like Me” is outcasts in society. In the line, “I wanna know about these strangers like me,” the reader sees that the main character in the song feels like an outsider to his surroundings. The reader can compare this with how the monster feels in Frankenstein. The two can relate with the feeling that everything is new to them, and they do not feel like they belong. Phil Collins goes on to request, “Tell me more, please show me.” People who are foreign to a place tend to ask questions until they begin to understand. The main character in the song is begging for information from these strangers, which mirrors how the monster in Frankenstein has a hunger for knowledge from the cottagers.
Black codes that were passed after the civil war ended was an effort to restrict civil rights for African Americans. They helped maintain a cheap source of farm labor and sustained the Social Hierarchy. Black codes made it illegal to carry weapons or even vote. They weren’t able to serve in juries, testify in court, marry white citizens and travel without permits. The Ku Klux Klan terrorized African Americans. Even though African Americans were the Ku Klux Klan’s main target they also attacked Jews, Gays, Lesbians, and Catholics. Not only did the Ku Klux Klan lynch ( public hanging ), raping was involved as well. The Ku Klux Klan started as a social club in 1866, Tennessee. Blacks were separated at schools, theaters, and other public places. The Ku Klux Klan and other terrorists murdered thousands of blacks and some whites to prevent them from voting and participating in public life. The KKK was founded in 1865 to 1866, they burned people alive, shot them, and beat them to death. In the Jim Crow Laws blacks and whites rode together in the same railway cars, ate in the same restaurant, used the same public facilities, but didn’t interact as equals. I do not take the elevator a lot in my day to day life because I live on the second floor in my residence hall and my farthest I have to travel to get to class is three flights of stairs. I never see the need to wait for the elevator, but even though I probably have not been on one for over four months, I still, like most people, remember the social norms that go along with riding in one. When you go in you either push the button for the floor you need or you ask someone to press the button for you. If you were having a conversation with someone either you wait to continue it when you get off or you lower your voice considerably. These rules obviously only apply if there are strangers in the elevator with you. If you are alone in an elevator you can essentially do anything (that still follows all of the laws. You could sing to yourself, run in place, or even play patty cake and no one would know. The problem is, once someone gets on the elevator with you, these behaviors are now breaking a norm. Social immobility has been a problem for many people, whether they are citizens of United States of America or immigrants from another country, this is something people confront from time to time in their lives. Janie from Under the Feet of Jesus by Zora Neale Hurston, and Estrella from Their Eyes were Watching God by Helena Maria Viramontes are both examples of characters restricted by the intersectionalism of their gender or social and racial class. Through the two class texts mentioned above, social immobility will be further expounded in the context of characters such as Estella and Janie, and it will also be explored as a force that leads to the restriction and/or the loss of innocence for the characters.

Once a school system drops their efforts to integrate schools, the schools in low-income neighborhood are left to suffer; not to mention that segregation in schools leads, not only to the neglect of schools, but the neglect of students as well. Resegregation quite literally divides the public schools into two groups “the good schools”, that are well funded, and “the bad schools”, that receive a fraction of the benefits-- more often than not the groups are alternatively labeled as “the white schools” and “the black schools” (and/or hispanic). Opportunities for the neglected students diminish significantly without certain career specific qualifications that quality education can provide-- they can’t rise above the forces that are keeping them in their situation.

Many people don’t want to believe that we are living in a social injustice environment in this country. They choose to ignore the fact that rich are getting richer while the poor are just getting poorer. The rich public schools are giving their students the necessary opportunities to live a decent life while the poor students are left out and have to struggle for those opportunities.
