A visit to the doctor is never an exciting moment for any child. The thought of syringes with sharp needles, the sight of blood being drawn, and unknown machines creates anxiety. As I waited to see my pediatrician all of these thoughts came to mind, terrified of what she could possibly do to me. I was next to see her, with every step my palms drenched in sweat and my heart raced faster. Expecting the worse, I wondered what she would say about the rash on my back or what she would do about it. When she took a look, she quickly made a diagnosis of pityriasis rosea. Unfamiliar with this skin disorder, I began to think the worst; maybe I caught it from someone or that, it might never go away and I worried it was contagious. Providing this kind of comfort to my patients is one of the goals I hope to accomplish. I hope to develop a rapport with my patients that will make them comfortable enough to confide in me about any other health issue, leading to more visits. At the moment I am currently a rising sophomore who seek to gain exposure in the medical field by participating in internships to obtain experience. Health Career Connection best aligns with my goal of becoming a pediatrician by working with preceptors and mentors who can expose me to different aspects of the medical field. My ideal internship experience has networking and professional development components to mold me into a well grounded professional. By participating in this summer internship I will enhance the skills I have already acquired and improve on my weaknesses as I seek to grow as a professional health care provider.
