English 102 Reflection Essay

Over the course of five weeks we’ve had to write three essays (four if you include this one). With every essay I’ve written I have improved my writing process. Having the chance to practice my writing skills in English 102 has made me a better all-around writer. From the beginning of this course, I knew I had a few major issues that I needed to overcome to improve my writing. The biggest being my issues with punctuation, specifically comma splices. Comma splices are something that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. Although I have gotten better at recognizing comma splices they still seem to sneak in to my writing. The first major essay that we were assigned in English 102 was the Analysis Essay. In this essay we were told to analyze a political cartoon or a piece of advertisement. I chose a political cartoon that was close to my heart: a political cartoon about the struggles of veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs. In this essay I discussed the struggles that veterans face when it comes to obtaining healthcare and how the VA compares the wait times at the VA to that of Disney land. In this essay I chose to write about how issues like mental health effect veterans as a community. I discussed major issues like homelessness, suicide, unemployment, and disability and how they affect the mental health of veterans. This was the first essay where we had to focus on citations. I had a hard time figuring out at first, but by the end I feel I had a good handle on them. With this essay I focused more on improving the issues that I had issues with on the first essay. That tactic was successful, I ended up with a 142/150. Which is a huge improvement, having the ability to know exactly what your issue is when it comes to writing makes it very easy to fix that
