English 101 Class Reflection

As a student who is normally drawn to the areas of science and math, I didn't really know what to expect in regards to my English 101 class. I used to not value the power of the written and spoken word, but over the past couple years I have definitely gained more respect for the ability to communicate effectively. After having this change in perspective I really wanted to improve my own communication skills, specifically in the areas of writing and interpreting what I read. I have never considered myself a good writer or reader, so at the beginning of the semester I was looking forward to gaining new skills in these areas, but I was also hesitant because this was my first English class as a college student. The first project I had to tackle was the Literacy Narrative. Before this assignment I had never written or read a literacy narrative before. While learning about literacy narratives in class we read some examples and I was really inspired by how uplifting and empowering the stories were. In class we also went over some of the genre's conventions, which was very enlightening because I had never been introduced to the concept of genre conventions (Goal 4) prior to this point. Like the Literacy Narrative, this was my first introduction to both of these genres. When I reflect (Goal 3) on my aspirational essay I definitely feel that I lost sight of my purpose. I focused too much on the background information about the organization rather than focusing on why I want to be part of that organization. Because I wasn't thinking about my purpose while I was writing, I didn't accomplish my goal.
