Final Reflection Paper
To write a reflection paper about the whole TESOL project for the past one and a half years is not a difficult thing for me because I never regret my choice to study in Alliant International University and learning master’s TESOL program here. With completing the master’s TESOL program, I was be able to benefit a variety of new things from different courses, as well as refresh my memory on thing that I already knew.
The first semester which I experienced left me a deep impression. I found myself to be an outsider in the class even though I tried my best to participate into all the classroom activities. All English teaching and learning environment is one of the challenges for me, because I haven’t such experience before.

After took the course of TES 7410, I had a deeper understanding of language teaching. Before I learned the course, I had knew nothing about the methodology except for the GTM (the Grammar Translation Method) which is the most common method in English teaching in China. Because I am a student all the times but not a teacher, I just know a little about language teaching. All the impressions of language teaching are from my teachers in English classes in the past. The professor not only showed the theories and methods to us in the class, but also practiced with the students. The learning process was pretty good because it provided us a chance to feel the different theories and methods as students. I am glad to contact with all kinds of methodology in this course which can make me know more about the field of language teaching. Only you experience various teaching methods, you can realize the advantage and disadvantage of each method in the teaching.
I would like to adapt some of the methods I learned from the course TES 7410 to my future China’s English class. I do not think it is easy to use these methodologies in China’s English class not only for the size of the class, but also for most people have accepted the traditional education for many years. It may be a difficult thing, but I want to have a
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
When I signed up for ENGL 191 I did not know what to expect as I had never token an English class at the college level. The English classes I was used to be taught at the High School Level and they went like this, Teach them grammar rules then hold their hand with worksheets for every possible step of paper writing all the way from idea generation to submitting the final draft. This arbitrarily cookie cutter process frustrated me as I did not want to write down my sources in MLA format on a note card then paraphrase the source over 10 notecards then paraphrase the note cards onto my draft. Because of the way my English Class were I had an expectation of what was done covered and in an English Class. I figured that college would be similar with allot less handholding and when I signed up for 10 to 11:40 Tuesday, Thursday section I thought that it was going to be an hour and forty minutes of tedious discussion of Grammar Rules and the writing process according to the instructor. After six weeks of ENGL 191 my idea of what English is has completely changed. My new idea of what English is totally different then what I came into the class with. I thought English was teadoius
In today’s competitive world, academic is very important and a good grade is most have in order to make a decent career. For the international student, this ESL class is very important. Over the past semester I have learned many things in my English class, educationally and through life lessons. Ms. Henry took the tedious, standard, subject of English and turned it into moral and intellectual lessons we can use in our daily lives. I latched onto the secret life of bees, serial, and the debate, out of the topics we went over this semester.
Relief, worry, and doubt are only three words that run through my head as I write this final exam for my English Composition class. As I entered the class I felt as though it was going to be an easy A for me, because I did so well on my COMPASS test I thought I would do well in this class. Then I quickly realized I am not as good at writing as I thought I was. This class is intended to turn a not so good writer into a decent writer and to enhance the skills of writing all together. As was determined by my instructor and peers I am one who needed plenty of guidance throughout this class. As I went through each writing project I seemed to have the same errors or mishaps in each project. Run-on sentences, quotes and paraphrases, and
...s proved the potency of such education. Shanghai American School should too abandon the system of the past and embrace this improved form of education.
Having to write an book essay got me used to preparing to get the book material so I can prepare to read them and take notes on what to write about. The second similarity is the method is the teaching the basic step by step of writing a paragraph. It was helpful to relearn them as I would know if I am doing it right or not. The differences are so far is that English 1A does not do group, unlike my previous classes. Not having a group work would take time for me to adjust, but at the same time allow me to learn an new experience to make more effort to look over my work and see my
Walking into my first day of English class I knew I faced many challenges. English 1102 is a higher level course, which meant more was going to be expected of me. I had the basics of writing a well developed essay, but I encountered many of my difficulties writing a well written essay. Getting to read many literature books, have in class discussions, and exploring different works of literature helped me to think out of my normal thinking capacity and learn new things. I learned how to think critically, have a passion for reading, and write better essays.
When I reflect back to the beginning of this semester I am astonished at how much I have learned. English 124 has been a real eye opener for me. Not only have I grown as a writer, but it has challenged me to become more of a critical thinker. In the class we have read many articles on diverse topics, studied theories of history’s greatest philosophers of education, and wrote various styles of papers.
Teaching students a language that is foreign can really be challenging for students as well as for the teachers. The dynamic rule for implementing instructing in a diverse class to English-learners is to use resourceful life skills such as diligence, hard work and patience. There are also methods that are involved in teaching English as a second language that can be creative for the teacher, yet beneficial to the student. First building a strong foundation that is essential to English learners will promote the language acquisition process. To do this teacher’s should always start with preparation. Advance preparation is essential in order to provide necessary adaptations in content area instruction and to make content information accessible for second language lear...
Chinese educators have perceived that the focus of language teaching need to change from the current teacher-centered teaching structure to the student-centered communicative approach. However, it is not easy to change the root of Chinese traditional teaching structure. For example, cooperative learning approach and communicative approach have not established a foothold in the English education in China (Chen, 1997). In spite of the call for communicative approach in EFL teaching, however, as many researchers noted (Lai, 2002, Tsai, 1998, Wei & Chen, 1993; Yu, 1995), the traditional
In conclusion, language learning has extensive area and to host a lot of methodologies and approaches. These kinds of approaches prove a huge of support to effective teaching and learning. Every approach has deficiency. Especially pre-methods approach like Grammar-translation and silent way methods. The importance issue is teacher aware of difference in these methods. In the past time or modern time are not the same but the teacher should set up to relative between to each other. All of the methods or approaches should be known but the most proper method/approaches should be chosen for cultivating effective language learners.
Writing a reflection and a summary of dozens of experiences is very challenging and demanding. I cannot count how many ups I had, yet I cannot deny the fact that I had some downs where I could transform them to ups. The year was full of challenges, excitement, fear and lessons. Each Wednesday I had mixed emotions. Every time I came to school I had the same fear and heartbreaks. In my reflection I am willing to compare between Adan at the beginning of the year and new Adan I became.
I would never have expected that I would enjoy writing as much as I do now. In my former perspective, English was just composing mundane papers and a waste of time. However, the moment I entered English Composition 1 on August 29th, my entire perspective on English started to change. Several assignments in the course and reading through the textbook Patterns for College Writing by Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell assisted me when it came to writing essays and understanding the different techniques and aspects of writing. I found myself learning more and enjoying English in this college course compared to my previous high school English classes, where I struggled and did not have the resources to improve. During the online course of English Composition 1, I have learned various aspects of writing and communication that have guided me to appreciate and succeed in English.
