Argument (Commentary): Connecting the evidence to the thesis- Based from the data in Document B, we can assume that if the highest percentage of the surveyed British teachers said they were not affected by cyberbullying, then other teachers in other nations and schools would most likely be the same. In addition, the effect of cyberbullying varies for different individuals. Therefore, what we can never assume is that everyone will be offended or take it seriously when they are cyberbullied.
She starts off her argument with her own personal experience then transitions into an example of a girl she interviewed named Caitlyn. She uses Caitlyn as an example to show that teenagers start posting their everyday lives from a young age. Caitlyn likes to post her blogs, her photos and documentaries about her school on the internet for the world to see. If the author where to include more personal examples of teenagers, it would not give the reader the suspicion on whether or not this is true for all youth. If teenagers thought about the consequences of posting online their daily lives, than many people would not do it. By taking this argument into consideration many people would be more careful about what they post. Cyberbullying is a very controversial matter. People are starting to say that cyberbullies should be prosecuted for their actions. First of all, there are more important crimes to focus on like murder and theft than just prosecuting a kid who said something “offensive” to another kid. Also, the First Amendment protects cyberbullies to have freedom of speech and say stuff to other kids. To add on, just because someone “excludes” another kid form not joining a group, does not mean that they should be criminally prosecuted. If people are being cyberbullied, they should not use social media much.

Sarah is an average teenage girl. She gets decent grades, likes to hang out with friends and is on the track team. One day when Sarah arrives at school she notices other kids staring at her and whispering, but she doesn’t think too much of it. Later in the day at lunch a few kids mutter nasty words at her as they pass by, kids she doesn’t even know. After school she turns on her cell phone and see 15 text messages from numbers she doesn’t know, all of them calling her horrible names like “skank” and “bitch.” Once she is home Sarah checks her e-mail to find messages like the ones on her phone, but one of them has a link. After clicking on the link Sarah is directed to a web site, and it appears to be all about her. Photo collages with unflattering pictures cover the page, and a bulletin board with hundreds of postings calling her nasty names, each one more malicious and hurtful than the last. After months of this Sarah can’t take it anymore, nowhere is safe, and she decides to end her life by taking pills from her mom’s medicine cabinet.
The overarching idea of the internet and hate speech is that it will spread if not censored and it will give a false idea that speech that is hateful is ok. Sean McElwee, Writer and researcher for the Huffington Post, said that “...the freedom of the press should be governed by a very strict prohibition of all and every anonymity.” However, with the Internet, the public dialogue has moved online, where hate speech is easy and anonymous. This leads to the thought of the hate speech spreading to them bullying others with these hateful ideas. A study by Karen Kaplan a writer for the Los Angeles Times found that Kids that are bullied or physically abused have a 60% higher rate to develop mental health issues. The direct link between bullying and mental health is increasingly real and it will continue without the censorship of hate speech on the internet. But the reality, there are better ways to stop hate speech without removing free speech. The main argument for this is to instead of repressing peoples ideas, let them be heard and have the public decide if the ideas are good or not for themselves. Cyber bullying and online crime must be put at a stop. Parents and teachers should play a great role in regulating what their kids are doing on social media. Parents give their children smart phones, tablets, and computers but they fail to convey the proper way of using those tools. They should teach them the rules of being on social media by telling them from right to wrong. Parents don’t give their children a car to use without telling them the proper rules of how to drive the car. If they don’t teach them how to drive the car then that child wouldn’t know what to do about his or her car and may lead to an accident. This is the same way of how parents should also teach their kids of how to regulate on social media.
