Emergency room physicians see many incommensurable types of injuries everyday. The six most common injuries occurring in the ER are from trampolines, lawn mowers, playgrounds, swimming pool, bikes, and burns. These kinds of damage are all things that ER physicians could see on a daily basis. From acquiring all this knowledge, I have decided that I want to enter the field of medicine, as an emergency room physician. Granted that emergency room physician jobs are stressful, due to the fact that they are dealing with injured and upset people 24/7. WIthin the medical field there are always risks of personal harm. Due to the risk this occupation holds has intrigued me from the beginning. Also to further gain my knowledge on what emergency room physicians do, I went to various sites on the internet. These sites informed me about the emergency room physician job description, characteristics, salary and everything I need to know about emergency room physicians.
That’s not the only thing emts do they also “care for patients at the scene of an incident and while taking patients by ambulance to a hospital. An EMT has the skills to assess a patient’s condition and to manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies”( https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/emts-and-paramedics.htm#tab-3). Emts have to respond to response to many different emergencies like “Heart attacks, Strokes, Complications from diabetes, Severe allergic reactions, Labor and delivery, Septic shock and Hypothermia”.( https://www.ems1.com/ems-products/education/articles/1166258-Want-to-become-an-EMT-This-is-what-you-need-to-know/) EMTS have really busy days “EMTS shifts can run from 8 to 48 hours (with a couple days off after), but their rotations are rarely the same week-to-week. The schedule can be refreshing for people who don’t like working a standard 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. job”.( https://www.ems1.com/ems-products/education/articles/1166258-Want-to-become-an-EMT-This-is-what-you-need-to-know/) EMTS have to see a lot of nasty things evey day “but here’s the thing: in the heat of the moment,
An emergency physician usually works as a team with nurses and other physicians at a hospital based setting such as an emergency department or a trauma center. An emergency physician has to know all the body systems and how each of them work. They have to know how to triage and how to do it quickly. Also they have to have a wide range of medical knowledge for every age, because vital signs are different from age to age and injuries will affect people differently as well based on their age. For example if a baby got it’s arm cut off, they will bleed out very quickly, where as an adult would also bleed out quickly but not as fast because an adults blood volume is about 5 liter and a baby’s blood volume is about 78 ml and a baby is also more susceptible to infections, because their immune system isn't as developed. The main duties in their job is to perform advanced life support and to stabilize patients with life threatening injuries similar to a paramedic but an emergency physicians scope of practice is much broader. For an emergency physician to stabilize a patient it can require a wide variety of procedures from performing a cesarean section to emergency thoracotomies which is a procedure done to open the chest cavity to expose the heart, lungs, esophagus and diaphragm that can be done in order to stop bleeding in the heart due to trauma, Perform cardiac compressions and to relieve cardiac tamponade. Some of the more common things they are required to do are soft tissue repairs such as basic suturing, use of staples and glue, local anesthesia and regional nerve blocks. Also they may have to do ophthalmologic repairs such as a slit lamp exam used to examine the eye with a microscope to locate diseases, also the use of a tonometer ...
The American Medical Association states that in about 10 to 20 years, there will be a severe shortage of doctors, especially Pediatricians, in the United States of America. A Pediatrician is a medical doctor specializing in treating children and their diseases. Pediatricians have to first become a physician. Pediatricians assess, diagnose, and treat children/adolescents, therefore, they have to get along with children, their parents, and their families. The job of a Pediatrician involves assessing, diagnosing, and treating children from the age of an infant up to the age 15. To become a Pediatrician, you first need four years of college, four years of medical school and three to eight years of internship/residency. This job also involves having good communication, patience and observation skills. In addition, you must be kind, decisive, compassionate, emotionally balanced, and able to connect with children.
To become a doctor one needs to finish 2-3 years of undergraduate university education with several required science courses. Minimum requirement of Medical school is a bachelor’s degree. Medical school takes (3-4 years to complete) and they must receive a Doctor of Medicine degree. Doctors must pass the certification exams, Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and enter the residency program (2-6 years). Sometimes licence from the province or territory where they’ll be working is needed as well.
You need two years of postgraduate schooling after your basic four. Most people going into training already have bachelor’s degree and some type of healthcare training. Most people that are physicians assistants did not go into college wanting that to be there job. Majority of them were EMT’s or registered nurses before and decided to go into the physicians assistant program. There are a lot of important skills needed to be a physicians assistant and those can make or break your career. Communication, emotional stability, and compassion are very important to have. Communication is key to be able to talk to your patients and let them know what is going on. Emotional stability is important to not break down when things go wrong with your patient and to not show weakness, staying positive. Compassion for your patients is also important to let them know you care and want to be there to help
The emergency department (ED) is an essential component of the health care system, and its potential impact continues to grow as more individuals seek care and are admitted to the hospital through the ED. Invasive procedures such as central lines are placed with increased frequency
I chose to interview a nurse M.B. and S.S. These two healthcare individuals opened my eyes into the medical field. M.B. is a registered nurse. S.S. is a licensed medical social worker. Both are employed through Reverence Home Health.
First I would like to state that any career in a medical field takes a lot of dedication and many hours studying and it is not for everyone. I would also like to say once an individual has made a career out of it the job has long hours and can be very stressful, so I suggest readers to not consider a career in medicine unless you are genuinely interested in the work, and are not in it just for the money.
