Psychology as we know is the scientific study of behavior (feelings, actions etc.) and mental processes. Media on the other hand consist of Televisions, Radios, Internet, Newspapers, and other means of disseminating information. Media Psychology, as stated by the Media Psychology Research Center is a new and emerging field, so the early entrants have the excitement and burden of defining the path. This means that, there’s no clear-cut definition for media psychology.
However, Tina Indaleco, in her book THE MEDIA PSYCHOLOGIST MANIFESTO defines media psychology as a discipline of psychology that examines the impact media has on human behavior, and the cognitive processes of individuals, groups, and cultures -on a micro and macro level. Stuart Fischoff goes on further to state in his article Media Psychology: A Personal Essay in Definition and Purview that, “Media psychology is concerned with the inter- and intra-personal psychological dimensions underlying the impact and use of any medium of communication, irrespective of the nature of the subject matter being communicated”.
Tina’s definition points out that, the main objective of media psychology is to examine the effect of media on human behavior. The media is a very strong tool for disseminating information, and educating the public. The media can influence our behavior in both positive and negative ways. It has become something that we cannot do away with. Due to the influence media has, marketers now use it as a medium to advertise their goods to the public, especially children.

The term “the media” is somewhat overused in our culture. It is a vague term we use to include any and all ways that messages are portrayed to us, usually in technology. Dr. Cyndy Scheibe, a professor at Ithaca College and media literacy expert, says that media is “messages conveyed through visuals, language, and/or sound that are mass produced for a mass audience. [Media is also] mediated by a form of technology and the producer of the message is not in the same place as the receiver of the message” (Scheibe). This means that media would include things like television, movies, the internet and print. Media doesn’t include things like text messages because they are not intended for mass audiences. For the purposes of this essay, “media” is mostly going to refer to television and video games.
Psychology overall is known as a social science but while watching television it's clear to see the more logical aspect of it. However it depends on which program an individual is watching. For instance, if an individual is watching CNN they are viewing cases regarding crimes, disasters, political chaos or other news stories. Through these news stories an individual learns anger, hate, being opinionated, shock, and scandals. CNN in particular has good, and bad stories that effects society and how we perceive the world around us. The television is our guide to the outside world and how we depict it. The media presents the many diverse fields of psychology. Another example are game shows such as, The Price is Right, which uses cognitive psychology. The Price Is Right uses cognitive psychology because the contestants on this show uses memory perception and problem solving. Another show called, Anger Management, uses developmental psychology, through this show audience members view individuals suffering from traumatic past events and how they have developed through them to their adult life.
Media is the most powerful sector of an economy. It is a tool to maintain a balanced society which is characterized by well informed people, effective democracy and social justice. In fact, media has unparallel influence on all aspects of human life in modern times.
The Mass Media are the different processes that facilitate communication between the sender of a message and the receiver of that message. It plays an important role in the socialization of children. In fact, there are many types of media; these include newspapers, magazines, radio, films, CDs, Internet, and television. These kinds of media, especially television, affect children’s and adult’s behavior in different ways.
Across America in homes, schools, and businesses, sits advertisers' mass marketing tool, the television, usurping freedoms from children and their parents and changing American culture. Virtually an entire nation has surrendered itself wholesale to a medium for selling. Advertisers, within the constraints of the law, use their thirty-second commercials to target America's youth to be the decision-makers, convincing their parents to buy the advertised toys, foods, drinks, clothes, and other products. Inherent in this targeting, especially of the very young, are the advertisers; fostering the youth's loyalty to brands, creating among the children a loss of individuality and self-sufficiency, denying them the ability to explore and create but instead often encouraging poor health habits. The children demanding advertiser's products are influencing economic hardships in many families today. These children, targeted by advertisers, are so vulnerable to trickery, are so mentally and emotionally unable to understand reality because they lack the cognitive reasoning skills needed to be skeptical of advertisements. Children spend thousands of hours captivated by various advertising tactics and do not understand their subtleties.
Everyday we encounter the media in some form. It could be waking up to the sound of the radio, or passing billboards in the streets or simply just watching television. They are a lot of different forms of media, for example, verbal or written media, visual media and aural media. Examples of media would include newspapers, magazines, film, radio, television, billboard advertisements as well as the internet. Media studies came about because of the developments in mass communication and it provokes the generation of exigent questions about what we think we know as well how we came about knowing it. There are always changes in the media and the term “media” refers to the many ways of physically forming meanings as well and carrying them. The term “media studies” on the other hand, means different courses priorities different media; different theories and different learning outcomes (Bazalgette, 2000).
The definition of mass media is “a means of communication that reaches large numbers of people in a short time, this can consist of the use of television, newspapers, magazine, and radio”, and within the last decade the internet as well. (HarperCollins) The media can actually be a minor or major effect on individuals depending on how or what their view is on the particular subject or matter. The effects it plays on individuals and societies will depend on the exposure to the subject matter at the time, but it effects all ages from young to old.

The modern society’s use of mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, as well as print media has largely influenced people’s ideas regarding themselves and the society at large. This is evident from their behavior towards themselves and their community as well as their treatment of the environment. While some experts believe that the media is to blame for most of the negative behavioral traits among the active members of society, the majority agree that the media makes people understand and develop a positive sense of association with their society within which they live, making it easy for them to identify and get their role in it.
