This makes it sound like its okay for teens to have sex, and that its no big deal everyone does it. It is a big deal though. More and more kids are becomomg sexualy active and the media is a big part of that. They need to stop showing so much sexual content to teens. They are sending bad messages to a group of very easily influenced people.
In modern society, the changing times as well as media executives wanting more ratings(and therefore money) have lead to teenagers more willing to try sexual acts at a younger age and the country being more openminded about sexual issues. The main cause behind the increase of an obsession with sex is media executives want better ratings and so they will shove more provacative and disturbing images into the public eye. Dan Jaffe, executive Vice President of the Association of National Adertisers claims, "If everyone is really so upset, the no one would be watching. The best test is whether the ratings go down" (qtd. by Clark, "Sex, Violence").
Therefore, there is a big difference of a girl’s behavior in 1840 than a girl’s behavior in 2007. Thus, Female teenagers are becoming more mature and are interfering adult’s world at a very young age, which will put them more at risk of having sex. This is applied for boys as well, as they enter the phase of puberty; their hormones drive them to a need for a sexual relationship in order to satisfy them. Some teenagers believe that having sex is something natural and usual. It is proven by the growing concern about young people's exposure to sexual content through different product of media.
From a young age, children are bombarded by images of the rich and the famous engaging in torrid public affairs or publicly discussing their increasingly active sex lives. No longer is sex education left to teachers and parents to explain, it is constantly in our faces at the forefront of our society. Regardless of sex education curriculums and debates about possible changes, children and teenagers are still learning everything they think there is to know about sex from very early on in their young lives. However, without responsible adults instructing them on the facts about sex, there are more likely to treat sex in a cavalier and offhanded fashion. According to Anna Quindlen’s essay Sex Ed, the responsibility of to education children about sex is evenly distributed between teachers and parents.
Teenagers feel more comfortable talking about their sexual orientation with friends for the acceptance and their support. Many teens who prefer same sex relationships tend to be more experienced in the aspects of sexual activity. Still today in this modern day society people struggle to disclose their sexual orientation if not heteorosexual. The stress and shame that comes from feeling different can make growing up even harder. Teenagers tend to have friends with the same moral values and personality traits.
As these young people start to mature they should become aware of the consequences that will come with sexual intercourse. Sex education went from an unimportant issue to a greatly important matter. Media is a dominant factor in the lives of young people.
The survey was conducted to see what young Americans had to say about sex. Sex is something that teenagers are faced with everyday. Peer pressure and trying to fit in with the crowd; seems to be a major reason why teenagers are having sex today. The survey proved that today’s teenagers are more aware of the consequences of having sex, and it is not a game to play around with. Teenagers are having sex, and as a result the spread of STD’s and the rate of teen pregnancy continue to rise. Teenage sex has done nothing but continue to interfere with teenager’s lives. Abstinence allows teens to take the focus off sex and gives them the ability to develop relationships with more depth. It is time for teenagers to make wise decisions that will benefit their lives.
Another reason teenage pregnancy exists is also probably because of the teenager’s social and family background. Klein (2005) notes that there are teenagers that become sexually active because it may be the result of the teenager’s upbringing and from the environment he grew up in. Considering the decrease in American teenagers who engage in sexual intercourse, the rate and the average age of teenagers doing the act is still quite high. He cites that younger teenagers are more prone in engaging in coercive and nonconsensual sex because they are still incapable of fighting back. The teenager may also have seen sexual abuse at their home and may have already become a victim to this type of abuse and got addicted to it.
The adolescent years, the years in which one develops his or her own identity, are marked by confusion, acceptance, and rejection. Therefore, numerous people conclude that teenage rebellion is natural – something that is bound to occur. But this is not necessarily so. Since humans grow substantially during the thirteen to nineteen age period and are constantly in search of their place in society, adolescents in particular are easily influenced by their surroundings. By understanding the effects that relationships, birth order, and media have on teenagers, rebellion can become a “symptom” that can be quelled without great difficulty.
