What is an e-cigarette?
Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are devices designed for the purpose of delivering nicotine to users in vapor instead of smoke. These devices are made to resemble regular tobacco cigarettes, pipes or even discrete items such as pens or USB sticks. The idea is to simulate the act of tobacco smoking by generating a slightly seasoned vapor.
There are currently over 250 e-cigarette brands in the market and they may come in a big variety of designs but have 3 common basic parts: (1)
1. a cartridge holding a liquid solution containing the nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals
2. a heating device or a vaporizer
3. a power source which is usually a battery

They appear to be safer, less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes. They are even promoted as such, but the truth is although they do not produce tobacco smoke, e-cigarettes still contain nicotine and other toxic chemicals.
Adverse incidents related to e-cigarettes have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) including hospitalizations for pneumonia and heart failure, second degree burns. Some of their health effects include coughing and mouth and throat irritation. Negative effects on lung functions have also been recorded.

Despite the lack of health information about e-cigarettes, they continue to be accepted by a lot of people with no reservations. Here are some surprising facts:

From my late teens, into my mid-twenties, I was a smoker. At first, it was just recreational; however that changed fairly quickly. I began buying them and smoking regularly throughout the day. It then progressed to smoking a pack per day until it was too late. I was officially addicted. I knew it was a terrible habit and I was shamed of it and would hide it from friends and family hoping they wouldn’t find out. Finally, after coughing hacking, and repeatedly getting sick several times a year, I came to the realization that I had to quit. However, it wasn’t as easy as I had anticipated. After relapsing several times before I was finally able to quit, I broke this terrible habit successfully. It was an extremely difficult habit to break and I’ll never go back. I was a lucky individual who had the mental toughness and willpower to overcome this strong addiction, but Americans struggle to quit each year, and many never do. Everyone knows that cigarettes are horrible for your health and increase your risks of cancer. Not too long ago there was a big advertisement for e-cigarettes also known as vaping. It was advertised to be a healthier alternative and comparable to a nicotine patch to help you quit smoking. Many people began to question this new form of smoking and if it was really a safer alternative. Even though vaping is a safer alternative than smoking, vaping is not harmless because you are still getting nicotine, inhaling poison and risking a weaker immune system.
