Homework in eighth grade is a very disagreed upon topic. People argue whether it is beneficial or a waste of time. Some say that homework is useful to students’ grades and gives the students non-academic benefits, while many parents and students say that homework is stressful and not essential. Homework creates stress for families, is superfluous, is too challenging for some students, and there’s little evidence to prove that it has academic benefits. Homework is a waste of time because it provides few benefits. Homework creates stress not only for the students, but for the parents as well. The article “Down with Homework,” stated “Many mothers and fathers spend every evening serving as a homework monitor, a position which they never applied”(Kohn). Kohn argues that many parents have to help their child with their homework and making sure that they do it which is stressful for the parents. In the …show more content…

Kohn talks about a high school chemistry class that does not have homework stating, “And if her advanced chemistry students are thriving academically without homework.” (Kohn). The author argues that if an advanced chemistry class has no homework and the students are still are doing well, students in other classes should not have homework. In the article, “Is Homework a Necessary Evil?” it said, “students who were regularly assigned math and science homework scored higher on the standardized test.”(Wier). Weir points out students grades are affected by homework which is true according to the article “Down With Homework” as well, but it only impacts scores a small amount. In the text, “Down with Homework” it states ,“In high school, some studies find a relationship between homework, but it tends to be small.” (Kohn).
