Dr. Donaldson also said, " Spending too much time struggling with homework can harm your child's health, worrying about whether they can do it can make them nervous, anxious and lacking in confidence, and deprives them proper rest after school." (www.scilearn.com) Homework causes kids to start cheating and plagiarizing because they either can't or they just don’t want too or they're afraid of not doing well and so they copy someone else's homework. Also, homework can also lead to kids not having a good childhood because of how many hours they use doing homework instead of playing outside, having a personal life, and having fun.
Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep. Proponents of homework claim that homework reinforces learning, and that in order to become a leader in education among all other countries, we have to assign homework, so students will better understand and grasp the concepts taught to them in school. However, as U.S. students get assigned more and more homework, the ranking of those students globally falls... ... middle of paper ... ...Taro. "My Daughter's Homework Is Killing Me."
Homework can be an effective tool to supplement instruction. However, the relationship between the amount of homework and scores on exams is moderately weak. Homework at the University of SAAA NNN should be capped and monitored in order to best maximize positive effects and minimize negative effects. Currently, it is far too liberally given to students and it negatively impacts the students, the students' other teachers, and their grades. Something must be done to ensure the success of the students in their academic pursuit at USI.
One of the first flaws of block scheduling is longer classes, which tend to lead to students loss of interest in the subject material. Queen found the average attention span of most Wilson 2 students is between twenty and fifty minutes (online). After this time frame, students are fidgety and ready to do everything except learn. Instead of trying to cover twice as much material in a longer class period, the natural tendency is to water down the material to maintain interest, resorting to movies, games, and doing homework in class. Either due to attention span limitations or to the watering down of material, learning is likely to be less effective, especially in courses such as math and science.
Children in today’s society complain how much homework they are getting or the parents complain that their children are getting too little amounts of homework or they both complain that it is just busy work. Students and parents, as well as teachers complain about the amount and quality of homework. Homework is be beneficial to students if it furthers their education yet it also gives them stress and puts them under pressure if the amount is too overwhelming and if the content is not helpful. Homework can be debatable on too much homework, too little homework or is homework is just assigned as busy work. Many teachers and parents are debating on whether to put a limit on how much or how little homework a student is able to receive per night.
Homework can cause a student to become stressed, or it can cause them to lose family time and sleep. A daily homework assignment is a non-beneficial way for students to be educated, and it causes detrimental effects to their lives; therefore, homework should be eliminated from a student’s daily schedule. First, homework can have detrimental effects on a student’s life. A student can become stressed or overwhelmed with homework. In fact, Ethnographic research shows that an extreme amount of assignments can play a major role in people who become dropouts (Buell).
The main issues regarding homework come down to whether the type of homework, mainly packets, is the problem and whether or not homework is actually helping students improve their grades and test scores. Many students have been given homework packets, which only help them understand specific terms. This type of homework leaves a student feeling unmotivated to complete the assignment or they do not particularly care what they write for the definition so they do not actually learn the material. While this type of assignment may or may not be completed by students in the way it was intended, it is still widely used in classrooms. Fro... ... middle of paper ... ...Press, 2004.
It’s also true that homework can be busy work, a reinforcer of mistakes, and stressful. Continual failure with homework, like continual failure during school hours, lowers self-esteem and makes it less and less likely that a kid will be successful. When homework becomes a nightly battle, it can damage parent-child relationships.” One side of the argument is that students should have a lot of homework, because it gives them more information, and practice what they learned in school, and also keeps them busy and not be “wasting” their time watching T.V., play video games, etc… The other ... ... middle of paper ... ...o plays a part in sports because the more family members in the family play sports the more each family member will appreciate one another. It will make the family get closer to each other too by going to games and encouraging each other. Sports is only one out of the many reasons, there should be less homework.
There is something very wrong with a government program that puts so much pressure on schools that they feel 8 hours is not enough time to train a child. Homework is a known cause of stress in children, burnout, obesity, and actually has very few weak ties to success in school. Saying that they are stressed out and have too much homework is a typical teenaged complaint, but studies have shown that it is true (Does homework really work?). Having young kids around in the evenings after school one is almost guaranteed to see a tantrum. The fits are not coming out of nowhere, children are being pushed to the limit and teachers may not even realize it.
