Why must educators understand issues of diversity and difference?

Educators must understand and recognise issues of diversity and difference amongst students to provide an inclusive learning environment. Each child brings to class a unique blend of differentiated social and cultural backgrounds, which can impact their overall success in reaching curriculum goals. Through educator’s acknowledgment of such diversity, students are given the opportunity to build a sense of identity and overcome stereotypical notions that society has created. Societal beliefs and practices give children an understanding of what is expected of them due to gender (National Union of Teachers (NUT), 2013, p.3). Examples of this can be seen with the assumptions of girls like pink and play with dolls or boys cannot like such colours or toys. This stereotypical outlook can limit career opportunities and aspiration if one believes their gender binds them to what can be achieved (NUT, 2013, p.4). Therefore, educators must counteract perceived notions of such stereotypes within the classroom to promote success in not only educational outcomes but also life outcomes (NUT, 2013, p.3). Achievement of this can occur by having students share “curriculum experiences” (MacNaughton, 2000, p. 12) whereby both sexes participate in activities that may be stereotypically defined by gender. Provisions should also be in place for providing resources that show representations of sexes carrying out roles that are not considered by society as a social norm (Hendrick, 1990, p.230 as cited by MacNaughton, 2000, p. 19). Achievement can also occur through challenging students to question the gender roles in stories (NUT, 2013, p.4). Through the recognition of gender stereotypes and making students aware that genders cannot define you, educators are can promote equality from a young age (NUT, 2013, p.26).
