There are more than 7 billion people in the world who are not exactly the same. Everyone has her or his own background, personality, beliefs, and values. Multiculturalism and diversity are referred to the word melting pot. The United States is one of those melting pot countries which shares the country with different types of people. Opponents of multiculturalism believe that countries should not be open to different cultures because it has many drawbacks, such as overpopulation, unemployment of local people, and loss of identity among immigrants. However, some believe that it is a contradiction; multiculturalism brings benefits to the economy. Identity means their native language, culture, traditions, beliefs, religion, and values. Immigrants have always problems with language because they do not have the same native language. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that learn English for finding a job. Immigrants want their children to speak English, not only at school but also at home in order to be more successful. As a result, children are losing their identity and ignoring their parents whose English is not very good. Parents should make their children understand their heritage by teaching them their native language. It is very important for children to establish their identity. Immigrants are more likely to forget their culture and traditions because of assimilation. Immigrants assimilate into new culture with the hopes of becoming socially accepted. Dr. Russell A. Unemployment of local people causes controversy between immigrants and local people. According to The Telegraph News, by Oscar Webb, violent clashes erupted on the Greek island of Chios on 8 April 2016. An angry crowd of local Greeks confronted hundreds of migrants. Local people do not want to share their country with newcomers. Immigrants are ready to work many hours, however, they get lower salary than the average. Economists say that immigration is good for economic growth. As Thomas Piketty, the celebrated author of “Capital in the 21st Century,” recently wrote, the crisis represents an “opportunity for Europeans to jump-start the continent’s economy.” Immigrants bring different skills and aptitudes and can increase competition in particular labor markets.
