But now to my main question. How are Disney princess movies affecting people on how they think or feel about themselves today. Well, throughout the last few years, there has been some discussions on how Disney Princesses have a negative impact on young girls and their future. This so called “Princess Affect” has, and is still changing, young girls into mature and emotionally developed women. A small study done by professor Sarah M. Coyne, showed that out of 198 preschoolers, 96% of girls and 87% of boys have viewed princess media. It also showed that 61% of girls, and 4% of boys, play with princess toys at least once a week. This influence could be good for boys, encouraging better boy esteem and being more helpful. However, it could damage girls by making them more susceptible to having bad body esteem and less confidence. For example, one person who was affected by the “Princess Effect”, was psychotherapist, Mary Finucane’s 3-year-old daughter. Finucane stated about her daughter that, “She began refusing to do or wear things that princesses didn’t do or wear.” …show more content…

They should teach parents a balancing act and have them tell their children what is right and what is wrong. Also, they should tell them that the princesses they see in Disney movies are just stereotypes, and they should not impact how they grow up. For example, one popular Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast, shows how women don’t need to have intelligence, but should focus on fulfilling a man’s needs. Also, today’s culture is teaching some girls that their worth more about their beauty instead of their intelligence. Writer, Peggy Orenstein, the author of the book, Cinderella Ate My Daughter, stated in her book that girls with an obsession for beauty, can increase their vulnerability to issues like eating disorders, depression, and even risky sexual behavior.
