To achieve discretion, one must have an incredible amount of courage and a vast understanding of what can potentially be to his/her benefit or detriment. Sir Walter Scott, Scottish novelist and playwright once noted “Discretion is the perfection of reason, and a guide to us in all duties of life”. In essence, this quotes emphasizes that discretion or the lack there of, is not only a quality that can hinder ones ability to progress, but the ones around you as well. Breaking this quote into two separate portions, it captivates a more holistic meaning. “Discretion is the perfection of reason…” the understanding of consequences and the consequences that accompany certain actions. Being able to effectively and aqedatuey evaluate situations and to determine the outcomes that could possibly derive from your own inability to be discrete, can be a valuable trait. From just a substance less glance at Sir Walters words, one may conclude that “In all duties of life” solely means the duty to your own life, but through critical thinking, one can conclude that Sir Walter is also setting forth the idea that we all have a duty to each other. Stating “… And a guide to us in all duties of life”, not only creates the image of our own path but how our actions effect the path that may collide with ours. As a man, I have an obligation to take the words of Sir Walter Scott and to apply them to every aspect of my life. Learning to assist situations and determine what should and should not be said is incredibly valuable, and a trait I am very proud to have acquired. The courage to withhold information that was entrusted in me from a fellow friends, brother/sister, or mere acquaintance is honorable, and something I believe every man/woman should learn to embed in their life
