Digital Citizenship and Research Fluency Unit Technology has become an important part of our daily life. Think about it, could you honestly go a day without your phone; Checking Facebook, Twitter, or posting on Instagram. With the advancement of technology in this day and age, it is important to learn all the responsibilities that come with technology, especially when it comes to social media. Students need to keep in mind that everything that they access on the web is not always true. But also all the damage that the internet can cause. So many have taken social media and created a place to air out dirty laundry. Privacy as we know it, is now a thing of the past. People often get recorded without their consent and the video is uploaded to social media. With the integration of smartphones not only do people misuse social media, but many use their phones to send out hurtful messages about each other. Which leads to yet another problem such as social media bullying as in the case of (video). This would bring awareness to students about real life situations and what can happen when you misuse the internet. I believe it would also be a good idea to explore a few cases involving adults, so that students can see that even an adult can have consequences when misusing the internet. Cases involving cyber bullying would also be a very good topic to further explore to bring awareness to kids. “Technology gives us power, but it does not and cannot tell us how to use that power. Thanks to technology, we can instantly communicate across the world, but it still doesn’t help us know what to say.” (Sacks, n.d.) Just like the quote states we must learn how to use technology and everything that it can provide. That’s why I feel that awareness on the right way to use the web is very important.
