In the middle of the ninth century a war broke out between the Frankish nobility, causing Europe to be divided. A woman named Dhuoda, wrote to her son, which was being held hostage because her husband had betrayed the kindship of Charles the Bald. Writing to her eldest son William, she sets guidelines for him to follow, in order that he obtain a heavenly inheritance. She also is a concerned mother, wanting to give her son the best advice she can, so that he can be a respected and be made known to God. She gives him guidelines on who to pray for, how he should mimic good examples, and be completely obedient to his superiors. His main superior being God, but she emphasizes the importance of being the best servant of Charles the Bald, for his future benefit and to keep him alive. …show more content…

She says that he needs to pray without casing because that is what the Apostles directed them to do (83). She also says to pray for the past, present, future, and all levels of the clergy. Dhuoda wants him to pray for everyone he can because she says that God hears all prayers, and it is unclear on whose prayers he will choose to answer (83-85). It is important to pray because God does hear all prayers. Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons a Christians owns. God has the power to do anything he wants and if we humbly ask, he will answer all prayers. Sometimes this can get blurred because some people think their prayer was not answered, but in reality the answer might not have been yes. Sometimes God say no to our requests and sometimes he says yes, but not right now. Prayer is important and she is a wise mother for instructing him to do
