Devil May Cry is a game that is centered on demons and devils. In the game series, Sparda is a demon working under the Mundus, the ruler of the underworld. He was known as the most powerful demon swordsman in hell. Due to his supernatural attributes, he possesses power upon a godly scale. During the reign of Mundus, Sparda saw injustice and tyranny that Mundus impose on the humans. Mundus was then defeated by Sparda. What was left of Mundus' armies retreated back into the demon world. Although it is understood that Sparda ruled over the humans, he eventually vanished. His activities over time are shrouded in legends.

Sparda demonstrated his "otherness" not only to humans in terms of his supernatural abilities, but also to the demons with regards to his sense of justice. Because Mathias's family had books recording the secret arts alchemy, Mathias had a detailed knowledge of alchemy. While he was on an expedition, Elisametha, his wife, died from an illness. Because of this, Mathias was grief stricken and bedridden. Leon Belmont, Mathias' friend in combat, was then forced to continue the expedition without Mathias. When Leon's wife was kidnapped, Mathias told him that it was the a vampire's doing who had a castle in the east. Similar to the film Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992, Mathias devised a plan to take revenge on God for stealing Elisabetha by becoming a vampire and living eternally. He manipulated Leon in order to obtain a vampire's soul, and he was reborn with it. He then offered Leon to join him and become immortal, because they both suffered the same loss. However, Leon refused and vowed that his clan would forever hunt him down for decieving him. Mathias then proclaimed himself to be Dracula. - Vincent
