Recommended: Success in Operation Desert Storm

Desert Storm was a part of the Gulf War, Desert Storm was a codenamed Operation to get Iraq soldiers out of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. This was the first foreign crisis that the U.S. got involved in since the Cold war. It was because of saddam Hussein. Saddam ordered his Iraqi army to cross the border to Kuwait. This wasn’t some random attack by Iraq. but instead Iraq had been preparing for this for years, they knew what they were doing and were heavily equipped with weapons.

Iraq and Saddam Hussein were trying to take over Kuwait, which was a major oil supplier to the world. If Iraq got Kuwait than Saudi Arabia would be right next to them. So then Iraq would pose an Immediate threat to take over Saudi Arabia, which was also a major oil supplier.
Over the next several weeks America launched over 2500 missiles on Iraq military. After this Iraq got tired of just sitting there so they finally started to fight back. They launched missiles at the barracks that were blocking Iraq from entering Saudi Arabia. Before February 24 the real ground war hadn’t even started. They fought on the ground for weeks, even though we were still bombing Iraq when we started fighting we still did it and moved into Kuwait. Desert Shield was another codenamed attack on Iraq this was another phase in getting Iraq out of Kuwait and not allowing them into Saudi Arabia. What we first did was get a much greater number of troops into Saudi
But Iraq didn’t leave Kuwait untouched, Iraqi troops that had been in Kuwait destroyed millions of dollars worth of valuables. Also as they retreated they detonated explosives at many oil wells. This messed up the environment so much in the Persian Gulf. This made water contaminated for years in Iraq. Desert storm, and Desert shield both made huge differences in the middle east even to this day. Because if Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia wouldn’t of had all of the different countries help that helped, then Iraq could’ve easily took them over and with all that oil and Saddam Hussein combined that could’ve been very dangerous. In 1941 Harry S. Truman made another assertion of Americas protection and alliance with Saudi Arabia to Abd Al Aziz. Truman stated that “support for Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity and political independence was a primary objective of the United States.” (Countrystudies.com) Another stipulation of this pact was that the US established a permanent military training mission in the Saudi Arabia. That mission lasted until 1992. Soon after the pact between Truman and Aziz was agreed upon the US-Saudi relationship would endure its first major disagreement. On May 14th, 1948 Israel was declared an independent state in the former Arab dominated Palestine. Israel’s independence was backed the United States. Saudi Arabia refused to acknowledge the country of Israel and to engage in any relations with them. The Saudis concerns of the Israel-US relationship were reinforced in the 1970’s and 1980’s when the US sold arms to Israel, but refused to sell arms to Saudi Arabia. In some cases congressional leaders refused to sell arms to Saudi Arabia on the grounds that Saudi Arabia might use them against Israel.
