I usually don't read or focus on different styles of writing. I think the fear of indifference and confusion makes me not want to explore but also my patience isn't there. Reading these two essays it was really interesting seeing the contrast of personality and different style types of writing. I enjoyed the humor that Lamott showed but I also liked how detailed and clever Didion was. Didion talks about how much the effect writers have on readers while Lamott talks about how much effect the readers have on the writers. Lamott shows shes almost scared for anyone(reader) to read her first drafts but Didion describes how the writers have a “tactic of a secret bully” on the readers mind. After reading this it made me realize my writing is important
...ach essay I would say that authors do an amazing job of telling their stories. I do think it would be nice is Brent Staples tell more of how he really felt when dealing with these situation instead of giving just a brief example. Laymon essay was well writing and very understandable I love that he doesn’t tell you what you are supposed to learn from this essay but you make of it what you will.

Right out of the gate, Bradbury explains arguably the most important characteristic any writer can possess: love for one’s work. Instead of droning on about boring fundamentals, Bradbury leaps right into the fun stuff. Instead of espousing trite clichés about his craft, Bradbury embraces the passion and enjoyment that writing fosters. Bradbury immediately gains the reader’s interest by rejecting the conventional methods of discussing writing and instead focusing on why people love to write.
In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting three inspirational people and their experiences on reading and writing. Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, and Sandra Cisneros all had different opinions about it. All of them overcame struggles that were different but similar in some way. What really intrigued me was that they followed their hearts in what they wanted to do even though people told them they couldn't.
Various writing styles can be seen throughout the centuries. Every author chooses their writing preference based on their personality, possible themes, and preferably their comfort zone. Success is not promised with every composition yet writers must attempt their luck in order to grow in the literary field. In this paper I will be focusing on some similarities and differences between Nathaniel Hawthorne and Thomas J. Whitman’s writing styles.

For class we read “The Death of the Moth” by Virginia Woolf and “The Death of a Moth” by Annie Dillard. This was the first time I had read either of these essays and I have found a new respect for their style of writing. I think that the amount of detail that they put into the two essays was astonishing. But, what impressed me the most was the difference between the types of detail.
The essay that I liked the most is “Breaking into Cars”. In this essay Stephen explains with humor and vivid expression how growing up as one of seven children shaped his life. I enjoyed reading about the events of Stephen’s childhood. His description was clear. It is easy for anyone reading this to picture seven children rushing to the dinner table to grab one of only six chairs. I agree with the analysis that this story catches one’s attention right away and that it conveys Stephen’s personality well. It is clear how growing up in this environment would leave Stephen with a writing style that is much like his personality. Relaxed and funny but with confidence to be able to roll with the punches.
The style of the essay changes tone from the first four paragraphs which leans toward a formal style; the formality is mainly due to the lack of “I” statements and first person point of view. The conclusion paragraph switches to a less formal almost conversational tone. ...
As every well-read person knows, the background in which you grow up plays a huge role in how you write and your opinions. Fuller grew up with a very strict education, learning multiple classic languages before she was eight years old. Fern grew up with writers all throughout her family and had a traditional education and saw first hand the iniquities of what hard-working had to contend with. Through close analysis of their work, a reader can quickly find the connections between their tone, style, content, and purpose and their history of their lives and their educational upbringing.
What is writing style? I started out thinking that writing style is a personal thing and that all writers have their own style. But, this way of thinking is really just a simple way to answer the question. After more careful thought, I realized that style is actually quite the opposite of personal and original. Style is a form of standardization. As writers, we all follow certain rules and guidelines to make our point. Style is these rules and guidelines.
The article “How to Write with Style” was written by Kurt Vonnegut. In this article, Vonnegut provides 8 timeless guidelines to direct the readers to build their own way of composition. Therefore, in the following paragraphs, I will respond to several questions regarding Vonnegut’s guidelines, and relate them to my personal life experiences. Firstly, when I was interpreting the article, I had mixed opinions about it. Due to the fact, what it said were the things that I wanted to get along with but never allowed during my high school period.
I have read the essays assigned for this unit before, but they are never tiring. Each one holds a piece of my truth in what writing means to me and sheds light on what each writer interprets good writing is to them. As far back as I can remember, I have always written my thoughts down. I would describe myself as, “not a reader, but I am a person that writes”. If I used the word “writer”, it was in lieu of the word “reader”, it was not as a title or a designation, it was an adjective only. Even after completing an entire book 8 years ago, I did not consider myself an author or a “writer”. It was not until recently that I even understood the power of the designation of being called a WRITER!
After working in business for quite a few years, I finally had the freedom to read whatever I wanted in my spare time, but as I ventured into more and more difficult works, I found that the ideas I wanted to express weren’t easily contained in just essay form. I found that I wanted to share this with others, and learn how to improve my own writing, but bring these different ideas to others. I originally had come back to school to do more of a research oriented study, a science or math based major. After retaking the English Composition 122 class at CLC, where we covered science fiction along with classics, and other forms such as memoirs, I began to realize that my passion for reading and writing could be beneficial to others as well as myself.

I feel that I can place myself into other people’s shoes and see the author’s voice and point of view, while also hearing the mood and personality of the characters themselves. I realized that day that I did not need to be “as good as my sister” to take value from reading and writing. I had spent so much time throughout my life trying to enjoy the things that she did about reading and writing and never realized there were other parts of literature that would intrigue me.
