An American in Paris took place in Paris, France, and embodied the color, atmosphere, and spirit of Paris. At the beginning of the musical, it showed the streets of Paris, which were beautiful and elegant, even almost mesmerizing. As I watched the musical, it seemed like we were in the streets of Paris. There was huge architecture and buildings and a lot of the musical took place at a café or their homes. Everything was elegant. This set definitely enhanced the musical. Everything including props and the set, helped bring it all together. For instance, in the café, there were tables with chairs set around them, there was a basket with food set on the table. Also, the production was in color, but what stood out to me was that the clothes seemed

“Before I Came to Paris”, is the first chapter of Gertrude Stein’s novel, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, in which Alice B. Toklas narrates a basic history of her life and the events leading to her departure for Paris. Alice was born in San Francisco, California where her grandfather, a pioneer, had moved to in 1849 and married her grandmother, a music lover. Men of the family participated in Paris battles leaving behind the family for some time, eventually returning as land owners. Alice was not a fan of the violence that her family participated in but rather had hobbies in needlework and gardening. She was also interested in paintings, furniture, tapestry, houses, flowers, vegetables and a view that was not looked at. Alice was the
The set was well done and gave me an impression of a hotel room upon first sight. It was easily identifiable as a upper class hotel room, fitting the proclaimed prestige of the guest they were expecting. The set was identifiable as coming from the 1930‘s mainly due to the old time props, such as the telephone and the giant radio they had. Fitting of a comedy, almost every part of the set was used at least once for some kind of comedic effect. The characters would get them selves wrapped up in a telephone chord, or they’d be chasing each other around furniture, they’d shove each other through doors, or even hide in the closet or bathroom.
Angels in America is a moving piece of literature and film. The characters are created with such debt, and background that they came to life. The dream-like structure overlaps with the realistic powerful scenes, truly giving them play a heavenly glow. The conflicts are heartbreakingly truthful and yet how the characters over come them are moving. I have read very little plays thats have had such a powerful effect on me. I highly suggest everyone finds an opportunity to enlighten themselves by both watching and reading Angels in America.
Musical theatre is a type of theatrical performance combining music, dance, acting and spoken dialogue. Written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, ‘West Side Story’ is a classic American musical based on William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The through-composed score and lyrics are used to portray different characters and their cultures, the rivalry between the Jets and Sharks, and the emotions felt as the story progresses. This essay will be exploring the music and how effective the score is in realising the world and characters of the musical. Furthermore, it will discuss how Bernstein and Sondheim relate characters’ diverse ethnicities to particular musical ideas and motifs.
The setup of the stage was very simple. It was the living room of a home in the early 1980’s. It looked like a normal household, and it had small things such as crumpled up pieces of paper lying around the wastebasket. It also had a couch, circular class table and a recliner in the living room. The dining room was to the left side of the stage and only had the dining table and surrounding chairs. There was a door in the back of the set where characters entered and exited through. Beside the door was a table and stool where Willum presumably worked on his blueprints for the hotel. Overall as the director, I would have liked to seen a great emphasis through dream scenery. Throughout this whole play, I thought of it has a large dream and everything was happening for a specific reason. I would also like to have seen the costumes represent the characters portrayals. Angel outfits, wings, political attire for men, a nurse outfit for Belize, and some shabby clothing for the women. Identity had given Angels in America the ability to reach the viewer. It supported the production and made things easier to envision and more realistic to our society. Many of the characters had differences that set them apart just like our society, but on the other hand those differences just like the “spine” were the backbone of their culture.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been mesmerized by all things French; their language, cuisine, and their distinctly chic simplicity speak to me in ways very few other things can. My dreams of experiencing these exoticisms first-hand have always seemed distant and unreachable due to my relentlessly tight budget, until now. With the help of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, I hope to overcome my financial encumbrances and spend a semester abroad amongst the people who have inspired me all my life.
The Hippodrome setting played a big role in the success of the play, because the seats were close to the stage, which made the audience feel more intimate with the actors. The set was filled with everyday electronics and video games that were popular with today’s generation, and it was good way to capture the attention of the younger audience. The costumes worked for the actors because they were outfits that teens and young adults would wear, which made it easier to relate to the characters. The lighting for the production was awesome because it went well with the sound effects. For example, when Ian was doing a simulation for his new job, he set off a missile and when it exploded the lights changed from blue to red to symbolize seriousness of the situation.
The definition of an American, is someone who is a citizen of the United States. Many African Americans, and immigrants struggled to become actual Americans in their lifetimes, because others didn 't see them as actual people; and based it on the color of someone. In today 's world people who live in America consider themselves as Americans, but to me there is certain qualities that make a person an American. To me being a true American is not based off of what Country they were born in, or what race their parents are, or even if they were immigrated to the United States. People from all over the world would say that maybe people could base this off of someone 's family heritage, or where they were before they came to America. If you were asked what makes an American an American what would you base it off of? To me there are four specific characteristics that make a person a true American; those three things would be, freedom, individuality, belief in the country, and happiness.
of the dancing scenes the dancers are synchronized; also the men in the Moulin Rouge wear the same. The fact that the 'baddy' of the film is portrayed as being English is similar. The Moulin Rouge is all about putting on a show which is what musicals are all about, especially Broadway musical. There is a huge element of romance throughout the film. The film on the other hand is different to typical musicals as there isn't a happy ending.

From the mastery of French cuisine to the meaning of French art, the French have changed and evolved in many ways to produce a specific modern culture, the dignified culture of the French. One thing that parallels the progress and continuation of French culture is the role of women throughout France. Compared to other nations, the role and rights of women in France were confronted earlier and Women’s suffrage was enacted earlier. The role of women in France, because of the early change in perception of women, enabled France to develop faster and with less conflict than other competing nations.
For example, the wall was made of wood, but the color contrast gave it a realistic impression. The set design is important because it gives the audience an idea where the setting of the play is. Although the building in this play was relatively new, the original Broadway play set design was very worn out. In some case, it does not matter if the director does not want the set to be same as the original, he has right to change even if it’s a true story like Avenue Q. But, one think I personally did not like about Avenue Q is the set does not interact with the story line because in Avenue Q middle, and lower class family live so the apartment should be worn
Paris is known for having good baguettes and duck. Paris is also known for having many bakeries with croissants. I would prefer trying all of the foods in Paris that aren’t in America. Another thing I would like to experience is their culture. I want to be in Paris on July 14, Bastille Day, because it’s on the same date as my dad’s birthday and four days after my own.
