Leveling up was written by Deborah Zoe Laufer, and is a play about three roommates in their early 20’s Ian, Zander, and Chuck that are glued to their video games. They are professional gamers behind their computer screens, but when Ian lands a job with the National Security Agency gaming begins to have consequences. Leveling up is a fresh, modern look at how we maneuver the foggy line between virtual and real worlds and what it really means to become an adult.
The Hippodrome setting played a big role in the success of the play, because the seats were close to the stage, which made the audience feel more intimate with the actors. The set was filled with everyday electronics and video games that were popular with today’s generation, and it was good way to capture the attention of the younger audience. The costumes worked for the actors because they were outfits that teens and young adults would wear, which made it easier to relate to the characters. The lighting for the production was awesome because it went well with the sound effects. For example, when Ian was doing a simulation for his new job, he set off a missile and when it exploded the lights changed from blue to red to symbolize seriousness of the situation.
The sound effects and music for the play was recorded to go with the actions of the character’s and whatever was taking place on stage; for example, when Ian and Chuck would play a game since there was no television they needed sound effects to better depict them playing a game. The music used in the play was relevant to today’s period and fit in well with the scenes, like when Ian says he’s going to get a job the song “I’m going to win” fit in perfectly, because it showed his determination. They also used music to help...

...onflict between friends. Addictions are addressed in the play by showing how all the roommates were obsessed with video games. Loneliness is portrayed by showing how Ian would rather play video games and interact with virtual friends then interact with real people, and conflict between friends because the situation with Zander when he goes behind Ian’s back and went into his account.
In conclusion, the overall experience of the play was great. The actor’s did a really good job at delivering their lines, and blended in well with their characters. The lighting and the music were used well, and helped transitioned into new scenes. The director and producers of the play made the characters relatable and realistic, Caldwell did a good job at portraying her image of how the play should go and it was effective. Leveling up is a great play that all generations could love.
