Many of the chronic diseases that exist in society today develop because children in the United States are not properly educated on the importance of dental hygiene. Educating the younger generation about dental hygiene and dental care allows them to live healthier lives. This creates intellectual decisions concerning their overall health, and will allow future generations to do the same. Numerous researchers and dentists have observed that this topic is a major issue emerging in not only pediatric dentistry but also in general dentistry. According to Paul Griffin Information Knowledge System Management, Dental decay is the most prevalent chronic disease among both children and adults in the United States. Griffin goes into further detail about dental hygiene when discussing the recent national data findings that suggest that several disparities in dental care exist due to the lack of resources concerning dental care. Since there is a lack of dental care this in effect causes a lack of dental education among the younger generation which leads to the majority of chronic diseases that are prominent in the United States today. The government’s role in United States is tremendous in both economic and social terms. If the government decides to inform its citizens on the importance of hygiene especially dental hygiene, this will not only causes ailments rates to decrease, but will also allow economic prosperity for various reasons. When you are practicing good dental hygiene, you will surely be in a much better oral health. The problem is that a lot of us neglect the proper taking care of our teeth and gum. This is when most oral diseases start and also the reason why the dental health category is a multi-million, if not a multi-billion, dollar industry.

As I started my new journey of becoming a dental hygienist, I came into the program with no background of dental. I came into this program with an open mind and willing to embrace new concepts as well as develop new skills. During my time at the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene (CADH), I learned that as a dental hygienist that I am committed to promoting and helping each individual achieve their optimal oral health goals. In support of my client’s goals, I may assume any or all of the roles included in the dental hygiene scope of practice. My goal throughout this program was to help my clients achieve their optimal oral health goals through education, health promotion and providing preventive and clinical therapy.

Imagine having to spend half your fortune on correcting your teeth.”Tooth decay was a perennial national problem that meant a mouthful of silver for patients, and for dentists a pocketful of gold.” (Wallis, 17) If patients don’t take care of their teeth, many issues can start to appear later in their life. Some patients are not knowledgeable of the correct procedures toward keeping a healthy smile. In order to keep a healthy smile patients must be better informed about the knowledge to achieve that success and also maintain.
Over time as individuals age and are faced with access to care issues they may begin to neglect their oral health. As time passes between dental hygiene cleanings or dentist visits the presence of oral disease may begin to increase.
o Please describe a time when you performed a thorough head, neck and oral exam and the findings had a significant impact on how you proceeded with the dental hygiene process of care. Annette was performing her usual head, neck, and oral exam on a patient and found an enlarged thyroid. She recommended to the patient that she go see her primary care physician to get a better diagnosis. The patient went to her primary care physician and was told there was probably nothing. Later, the patient returned to the dental office and saw Annette and told her what the physician said.
In the Dental Hygiene field, many challenges come about every day and during different situations. Every day there are new challenges and unusual situations that occur in the dental field, but one challenge that continues to come about and has been a big dispute over the years is the ability to provide beneficial information about oral health care for the underprivileged. For the individuals that are not fortunate enough to pay to have services done in the dental office, lack the knowledge of how important good oral health care is. They do not receive the one on one conversations explaining the significance of taking care of your teeth and gums that the patients who can afford to make appointments and receive essential services do. Do you ever think that just a toothache could kill you? That was the case for the twelve year old boy named Deamonte Driver from Maryland. (Otto par.1) It was a $80 dollar extraction that could have saved this young child’s life. (Otto par.2) If his mother and him had dental insurance that procedure would have been taking care of with little to no cost. (Otto par.3) If mother had not been focused on getting a dentist for his brother who had six rotten teeth. (Otto par.6) Also she didn’t want to pay for what she thought was a needless procedure. Deamonte’s death and ultimate cost of his care, which could have totaled more than $250,000. (Otto par.8) The mother obviously did not know how important teeth are to people’s overall health. In America about 108 million people lack dental insurance as of only about 44 million people having dental insurance. (Otto par.4) When there are many dental insurance plans the are low in cost, yet effective and imperative to all. ( Klapp par.2) People need to have dental insurance due to how it effects overall health, and there are many different types of dental insurance that are low in cost.
However, on the a recent visit dated 23/12/13 the patient’s gingival condition had deteriorated, presenting with an increased plaque scores of 34% and bleeding scores to 63%. Intra oral examination also showed generalised oedema and erythema throughout in the mouth in response to this increase in plaque bacteria. The presence of supra-gingival calculus on lower anterior teeth and both sites of upper buccal molars and the patients BPE now reads 212 /121, putting the patients caries risk at a ‘High’ status.

This directed me towards taking one of the most important decisions of my life of coming to the United States to pursue Masters of Public Health (MPH) and learn from the pioneers who have successfully integrated it in the society with positive results. I wanted to apply my knowledge beyond the borders of dental hygiene education and learn sophisticated methods to address the co-morbidities and healthcare access inequalities, as I have seen in a lot of my patients. My interest in mathematics compelled me to choose Epidemiology major and learn statistical software to study disease burden, distribution and trends. I volunteered in George Washington University (GWU) ISCOPES- Adult health literacy team, where we attended Emory transitional house and educated people about various health topics including oral health. During my MPH, I did my practicum at Washington DC, Department of Health on “Analysis of utilization of dental home linkage and preventive dental services among DC Medicaid children less than 3years of age for calendar year 2014” using Statistical Analysis System software (SAS). This project gave me an insight about the Current Dental Terminology codes and the trends in service utilization in a subset of the U.S. population. In order to combat the need for dental education the Faculty of educational Science, proposed games. Computer games are a great way to attract the youth. In today’s society , technology is a huge factor. So , why not use it the wave of technology to everyone’s advantage. The dentist office have switched to technology also being that they do not use much paper anymore everything is done first hand. In brief, the faculty of Educational Science , created a three games. The first game was a variation of Pac-Man . The Pac-Man must eat the candy . after eating the candy the Pac-Man must avoid bacteria. The bacteria eventually leads to the tooth becoming dirty because of eating the sweets. In order to avoid losing the tooth due to bacteria the tooth must get to the toothbrush in the middle of the maze ( Klaus ) The game depicts real life experience therefore it is important because it allows children to see the effects of too many sweets and not being able to avoid bacteria in order to avoid bacteria you must brush your teeth well. The second game is a tooth loss stimulation each player has to answer a series of questions. The series of questions answered allows the game to predict future tooth loss (Klaus).
