Art is a provocative medium; artists from all around the world choose to express their identity in many different ways through art. The identity of an artist consists of their personal experiences and hardships; most artists gradually begin to express their identity through the embodiment of art as they begin to find themselves. This is where artists begin to explore ‘my place’. My place is a place where a person feels their best, it is where all problems drift away. Two artists that explore their personal experiences and identity through their artworks are Del Kathryn Barton and Marc Chagall. She is an Australian artist who lives and works in Sydney. Barton is widely recognized as one of Australia’s leading contemporary female artists. Barton works with predominately polymer paint, watercolour and fine tip pen, however she has often explored other media. Watercolour, painting, drawing, and sculpture is an integral part of her precision of imagery in the form of her expression. Barton is an artist who isn’t afraid to express life’s darker moments. As a child Barton suffered from anxiety and which was a factor in her sensory disorder. Throughout her childhood Barton knew what life was like on the other side, her vivid dreaming life allowed her to connect to things on a completely new level. Her enchanted and strange childhood led her to develop an overactive mind where she couldn’t distinguish the difference between reality and pretend. This disorder brought many problems and complications into Barton’s life; she would experience bizarre hallucinations and phobias, so bad that Barton became mentally unstable. It became too hard for Barton to bare at that time, so bad that she was in a crippling state for a number of years. Barton feared that she might end up in an institution if she continued the way she was going. To many, this sensory disorder would be debilitating but to Barton it was a gift. This re-enforces that motherhood is her beauty. In saying so the eye contact between the subject matter and the viewers is minimal in places. Both children are looking towards the viewers, making it seem as if they are holding the viewers’ gaze and want to interact. Whilst, Barton is sidetracked looking off towards her right, this creates a disconnected feeling, making it seem as if Barton doesn’t want to connect with the viewer, whilst Kell and Arella do. This creates a sense of balance and contrasts within the piece, making the viewers question their original assumptions about the meaning. However, in saying so the different directions that the eyes are facing create an invisible path. This path directs the viewer around the piece the way the artist wanted it to be viewed. The soft textured artwork incorporates a questionable value, as there isn’t one specific focal point with in the main area of attraction (the subject matter). Barton has used earthly tones, thin minimal lines, and exceeding detail to create obvious shapes contained in a defined area, making the composition appear more unified.
