Dehumanisation and the Holocaust
All the Jews had to wear all the same clothing so that they could be
recognised as Jews. Gentiles who saw these people in these clothes
knew that they were Jews and they could treat them how they liked not
as humans as to the Gentiles the Jews were not humans. This is
dehumanisation because they are not being treated as humans by wearing
those clothes they are labelled as Jews, and not humans. This made
such atrocities 'easier' to commit as they were being labelled as non
- human and Jews so a picture is put into their heads that they are
not human so it doesn't matter how they feel.
The Viennese anti- Semitic picture paper depicts the Jew as a
world-devouring vampire. They are dehumanising the Jews by describing
the as "world- devouring vampires" whereas they are completely human
and are not at all vampires. They have never done anything wrong to
any Gentiles and aren't doing anything wrong, just believing something
different to everyone but this does not mean they are world- devouring
vampires. This made such atrocities 'easier' to commit as an image of
a world- devouring vampire is being put into their heads, instead of
normal human beings.
The picture of a railway straight track going directly through the
arch of a building represents a factory, mechanical, going straight in
and straight out, they don't have a choice of where they are going.
This was where the Jews were taken and they don't have a choice
whereas they should have a choice of where they want to go, but they
are forced to go directly in or out, which is not human like. This is
dehumanisation. This made such atrocities 'easier' to commit as they
are not being treated as humans, and so it is as though you can do
anything to them, as they are not human.
"From now on you are all numbers. You have no identity. You have no
place or origin. All you have is a number. Except for the number you

o Some people may say, “A Jew is a Jew and there’s no getting around that.”
Murders inflicted upon the Jewish population during the Holocaust are often considered the largest mass murders of innocent people, that some have yet to accept as true. The mentality of the Jewish prisoners as well as the officers during the early 1940’s transformed from an ordinary way of thinking to an abnormal twisted headache. In the books Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi and Ordinary men by Christopher R. Browning we will examine the alterations that the Jewish prisoners as well as the police officers behaviors and qualities changed.
As Sartre explains, "the Jew whom the anti-Semite wishes to lay hands upon is not a schematic being defined solely by his function, as under administrative law; or by status or acts, as under the Code. He is a Jew, the son of a Jew, recognizable by his physique, by the colour of his hair, by his clothing perhaps, and, so they say, by his character." To the anti-Semite, the Jew's character is oily, tactless, intriguing, selfish and greedy. He believes that all Jews are this way, and therefore treats them all the same, with hatred and repulsion. While a Jew might be a successful business man, a doctor, lawyer, or teacher etc. he is also a Jew, and that is all he is recognized for in the eyes of the anti-Semite.Furthermore, Sartre argues that "if the Jew did not exist, the Anti-Semite would invent him." This is self explanatory by the fact that Jews have been used as scapegoats and will continuously be used as such in the future.
It is not right to say that all Jewish people of this time were being persecuted...
“Whence comes this combination of qualities of mind, body and character? These are qualities with which every one of us is familiar, singly and in combination; which you find in friends and relatives; and which other doubtless discover in you. They are qualities possessed by most Jews who have attained distinction or other success. In combination, they may properly be called Jewish qualities. For they have not come to us by accident; they developed by three thousand years of civilization, and nearly two thousand years of persecution; developed through our religion and spiritual life; through our traditions; and through the social and political conditions under which our ancestors lived. They are, in short, the product of Jewish life.” – Louis D. Brandeis
George Orwell's 1984 is predicting problems that are occurring today. The most pressing matter in the book seen also in the present is dehumanization. Dehumanization is the deprivation of one’s human qualities or attributes, removing individuality. Today this is happening due to the fact that people are losing their freedoms of privacy, speech, and thought. If changes are not made America will become a mindless, easily controlled society.
In that time period the Germans and the Allied Forces were in war. When they were in war the Germans took all Jews (except the ones in hiding) to multiple concentration camps and death camps. When they were sent to concentration camps, they were ordered to take off all their jewelry, gold teeth and clothes. They were provided with stripped pajamas with numbers on them so they can be recognized by their number and not by their names. They were also tattooed on their left forearm with the same number that was on their stripped pajamas.
Prejudice and the Holocaust Prejudice was the main factor that led to the holocaust. For some, resisting these forms of oppression was survival. Considering the dehumanizing the Nazis had forced upon the Jews, people took whatever courage and strength they had to get through this period of time. I believe luck also had a part to play in survival.
...f society. The second point of view held that Jews were inherently bad and can never be salvaged despite any and all efforts made by Christians to assimilate them. These Christians felt that there was absolutely no possibility of Jews having and holding productive positions in society. All the aforementioned occurrences lead to the transformation of traditional Jewish communities, and paved the way for Jewish existence, as it is known today. It is apparent, even through the examination of recent history that there are reoccurring themes in Jewish history. The most profound and obvious theme is the question of whether Jews can be productive members of their country and at the same time remain loyal to their religion. This question was an issue that once again emerged in Nazi Germany, undoubtedly, and unfortunately, it is not the last time that question will be asked.
The German were ruthless people and took away a person's identity. Eliezer said, “They took our hair off . . . all the hair on our bodies” (Wiesel 44). Hair for men in the Jewish culture signifies a lot of their identity. The way people dress can be for religious reasons and what the person believes is right. For example, the Muslim religion requires woman to not show large parts of their skin. Muslim woman where a parka to fully cover the body, and also where a hijab to cover their hair in public. It is a sin to expose a lot of skin in public. For these reasons religion plays a big role in a person's identity. Same way taking away the hair on the people's bodies turns them into someone else. People look the way they would like to look. Eliezer noticed, “Their possessions are taken from them” (Wiesel 36). Items that the Jews had brought with them had got taken away. Many of these items were brought for a reason, it could be for a sent...
December 7,1941 was a crucial day in time that impacted more than one 's life. Finding itself involved in a war that was spreading across nearly every continent, the United States took shelter as the attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor began. America worked hard in the following months to build up support and necessary needs. They built tanks, planes, ships and weapons to fight the war with great power. The American government then went on to build support through the people, mostly by creating posters advertising ways to financially support the war and the troops. World War II propaganda made a huge impact with war efforts on both the American and Japanese sides. Its purpose was to make the enemy be seen as an evil entity and make people want
In England in the 16th Century, with the absence of Jews, a popular negative image was created for them. Just as, today, we may imagine aliens to be estranged to us, enemy to us, and possibly even dangerous; the Jews were as good as aliens to England four hundred years ago. There were no Jews around to defend such a bad name, and so that reputation worsened to stereotype the Jew as a murderer and a demon. The rumours were exaggerated and invented tales were passed on.
In what way is that right? It’s just like kidnapping, we put humans in jail for that, but only when it’s another human. People act like just because they aren’t human that its ok and they lie to themselves telling themselves that its okay and that the animal will be taken care of, fed, and have a nice little “fake” forest or desert to live in. Just think of it as having a zoo full of humans, or stealing other humans to make profit or teach someone something new by doing something totally wrong and unethical.
Animals deserve fair and ethical treatment, however not necessarily equally. Non-human animals and humans are not one in the same, there is no way we will ever be defined and put in the same category. Humans have reference levels, the ability to reason and think logically. We have evolved to the point where we can study, contain, and determine the outcome of basically any animal on Earth, now it’s up to us to ensure they are treated fairly.
