“I went in a big machine, Mommy! I did good. I not scared,” she chirped. “Good job, love,” I smiled, patting the dark hair framing her face. “Look! Sucker!” she squealed, showing me her prize. “Yum! Did you say thank you?” She nodded her head enthusiastically, a motion that made my heart light. I stood when Dr. Monroe started talking. “All of her tests came back normal. There isn’t swelling or anything else to cause concern. I doubt she’ll vomit anymore and I was going to say she’ll probably be fatigued for a few days, but I don’t think that’s in her nature,” Dr. Monroe said as he smiled down at her. I nodded and took a deep breath of relief. I crawled in next to her and fell asleep with Garrett’s dark eyes smiling in my dreams. EIGHTEEN A week later, I still couldn’t stop thinking about him. I’d relived our entire past multiple times in my dreams. Everything from the first time we saw each other to turning around at the hospital had played on repeat. I found myself at the police department, standing on the concrete steps leading into the bustling building. Officially, I was there for work. Unofficially, I was going to stop by and say thank you to Garrett. After handling my official work at the clerk’s window, I used all the nerve I thought I had left and asked her where Detective Hanson was. She pointed me towards the hall. I cautiously opened the door to a large room filled with rows of desks. Phones were ringing and the noise of people talking bounced off the walls.
