For this skill application, I choose the one from Chapter 4 skill application case 3, the first thing that comes to my mind is I had a disagreement with my mom a couple weeks ago, I with her get along very well but whenever it comes to spending money, she and I always seem to have disagreements. Because she grew up in traditional Chinese culture which the parents and more specifically the mother has the final say in all things. I also grew up in traditional Chinese culture, however, I also have learned western culture that allows more freedoms. She thinks I spend way too much money on things I do not necessarily need, and I think I work every week to make money so I can spend on things I want. For this assignment, I decide to sit down with my mom and talk about our different views on spending money. During the conversation, I’m hoping that I can use more supportive communication instead of using defensiveness and disconfirmation communication. Because when it comes to communication sometimes we both feel threatened and became a little defensive rather than listening to what each other have to say.

When people receive education, they will also be receiving the real life techniques like the ways how to communicate, and how to tackle with the possible problem in life. In school, we have our teachers teaching us all the textbook stuffs along with teaching us to be actively participating in extracurricular activities. The extracurricular activities such as participating in speech, debate, sports, and other school programs will activate the communication skills inside the children. In the same way, the author Wes’s parents also learnt the communication skills in school. Not only this, they have even learnt the ways how to tackle with the problems without being afraid of the consequences. Discrimination and prejudice actions in American society is prominent with no hint of extinction. In the book “Sông I Sing” by Bao Phi, he depicts and highlights racism in his poems. The poet outlines stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination along with reference to white privilege. This two time Minnesota slam champion injects his passionate feelings of his views of other people into his poems. He advocates that racism shouldn’t exist in American society. Bao Phi is semi descriptive on the stories and brings his poems alive to visualize the content through words. The article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” by Amy Chua demonstrates the two different mind sets of parenting: Chinese parenting and Western approach to parenting. In my view, Chinese parenting is very strict about school work and extracurricular activities such as pianos and violins. For example, if we compare the two different sets of parenting; Chua says, for instance that Western parents believe that they are strict by forcing their kids practice their instruments for 30 minutes a day at most to an hour. This is nothing compared to the Chinese parents that would say the first hour of practice is easy it’s the second or third hour that gets tough (Chua 2011). This shows how forcefully strict the Chinese parents are compared to Western parents. The Chinese parents would say anything that really has to be said to their kid’s straight forward, but the Westerns would go about telling their kids, so it won’t hurt their feelings or their self-esteem. A few of these examples come to show that Chinese parents have intelligent kids, but are they intelligent enough for society? In other words are these Chinese children capable to work in group projects compared to an American kid that lives the usually life as a kid; like going to sleepovers and participating in different school activities. The one skill that I used more of was empathy; I wanted the client to know that I understood her situation as well her feelings. At the end of our conversation, I summarized everything that we talked about, especially her want to open up to her parents and express herself to them. She mentioned that she wants them to fell empathy towards her, because the lack of parental empathy that she felt when she was younger, has even affected her in her adult life (Kilpatrick,2005).

The couple has lacked communication as well as Mrs. Davis has felt unheard. Therefore, helping the couple in communication will began to reshape and reform new clear boundaries within the spousal subsystem and parental subsystem. Helping my client’s communicate in a way that brings value to each other will strengthen the couple’s love for each other which will build hope (Worthington, 2005). In assisting the Davis’s in communication I would ask them to complete invention 10-5 exercise the will help them discern their personal love language. A love language is how each person in a relationship expresses their love through words and actions (Worthington, 2005).
I, myself have learned a lot along the way during this Interpersonal Communication class. I have learned how to communicate effectively with those around me by using the information along with tips presented within this class and textbook. In this paper I’ve chosen two communicative behaviors from chapters four and five to improve my skills in; they are making prejudice opinions/judgments toward others and listening.
In this part of the assignment, I will be reviewing the strengths and weaknesses that were shown when I was using counselling skills on my client. I believe that there were more strengths when I was showing counselling skills compared to the weaknesses that there were.

In turn, having competent communicative abilities contributes to progression and maturation in many aspects of life, with education and employment being majorly affected facets. Upon entering this course this semester, I was unaware of my lack of important communication skills interpersonally, intrapersonally, and interprofessionally. Throughout my semester in this course, I have explored many different styles and skills used in communication. I have been able to recognize my strengths and weaknesses, and I have also been able to make noticeable and satisfying incremental improvements to enhance my communication. In this paper I will reflect on the knowledge I have gained throughout this semester that has allowed me to better my communication skills; I will do this by providing examples from my life. Furthermore, I will explore how I can continue to develop my commination skills in the future.
