For this skill application, I choose the one from Chapter 4 skill application case 3, the first thing that comes to my mind is I had a disagreement with my mom a couple weeks ago, I with her get along very well but whenever it comes to spending money, she and I always seem to have disagreements. Because she grew up in traditional Chinese culture which the parents and more specifically the mother has the final say in all things. I also grew up in traditional Chinese culture, however, I also have learned western culture that allows more freedoms. She thinks I spend way too much money on things I do not necessarily need, and I think I work every week to make money so I can spend on things I want. For this assignment, I decide to sit down with my mom and talk about our different views on spending money. During the conversation, I’m hoping that I can use more supportive communication instead of using defensiveness and disconfirmation communication. Because when it comes to communication sometimes we both feel threatened and became a little defensive rather than listening to what each other have to say.

She mentioned although I have been live in the United State for a couple years, but I still need to value my Chinese traditions. I can’ t act like many Americans are the same age as me, they spend almost of their paycheck, and in their bank account they hardly have any money left. She also says I spend too much money on clothes, makeup and shoes in the past couple years. But my point of view on this is I’m young and I wants to looks nice, also I make enough money to support myself every week and I don’t ever ask my mom for money, so I think if I like something and I can afford it then I will most likely buy the product. However, she thinks although I make money for myself, but I shouldn’t spend all of them on things I don’t necessary
