Death and Violence In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Prologue:

‘Romeo and Juliet’ by Shakespeare is a play which illustrates how

discrimination and intolerance leads to death and violence. The play

is known to be a tragedy and as it says in the prologue the platy was

really known as the ‘Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet’. It is abut two

personalities who fall in love. The both of them are from two totally

different families which have unimaginable hatred and enmity far each

other. It is known that the two families are the same in dignity,

pride and social status,”Two households both alike in dignity” From

ancient, grudge a break to new mutiny”. Death and violence runs

through out the play. It is shown when the two families, the

Montague’s and the Capulet’s fight. In cases Death, fighting and

brutality occurs. Violence in the play starts when the servants of

both families confront each other; they insult one another; this turns

into a street fight between the two families. The play ends with the

death of both Romeo and Juliet. “Pair of stars crossed lovers takes

their life”. The play had a wonderful response from the sixteenth

century audience. Death and violence in the play made it exciting,

intense, interesting and created suspense for the audience.

The first scene begins as Abram and Benvolio are confronted by

Sampson, Gregory and Tybalt; as the situation builds up it turns in to

a brutal street brawl between Benvolio who is a close friend of Romeo

and Tybalt who is the nephew of Lord Capulet. Both Benvolio and Tybalt

have totally different personalities. Benvolio on one hand is a peace

loving person worried about the con...

Romeo saying these words, “Oh! My love….my life….man inferred”.

Moments after Romeo dies Juliet wakes up and sees him dead. Juliet

gets hold of his dagger and kills herself, “Oh happy dagger, this is

my sheath. There rest and let me die”. As we see such a tragic ending,

the audience would feel a lot of sympathy for them. And thinking that

if Romeo had arrived just a while later they would get to see an happy

ending.

From my view the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ turned out to have two sides.

On one side Romeo and Juliet’s love and on the other side the enmity

between their families. Their love has really touched everyone, the

audience and the readers. It can be set as an example for others.

Death and violence adds to the play because it makes the audience want

to watch the whole play.
