Simple changes in our lifestyles can yield such large results in our quality of life. Many people believe that advances in surgery or new medicine, in a pill form, are answers to many diseases that effect a mass amount of people. Dean Ornish believes that when utilizing his program, The Spectrum, we can treat these diseases by just simply changing parts of our lifestyle. Ornish believes that treating preventable diseases, naturally, without surgery or medicine is possible when participating in his program. Ornish explains that it can be used in a variety of ways whether you are on your way to a heart transplant or just simply want to live better, happier, and healthier. Ornish’s program is unique from many others because it is based on three decades of research while a majority of others are written based on anecdotal testimonials, or on the experience of others, or wishful thinking. Ornish and his colleagues have proven that this program works to help prevent, and to slow, stop, and even reverse the progression of the most common and most deadly diseases, including coronary heart disease, prostate cancer, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, elevated cholesterol levels, arthritis, and many other chronic diseases. The way Ornish places them into five different groups is helpful in deciding the best ingredients or dishes to make. When he mentions that it is not all about eating all foods in group one and none from group five but an overall better way of eating. If I decide that I indulge in mostly group four and five foods, that’s okay. If I do so, I should try to eat more from groups one and two the next few days. While reading his ways of the Spectrum I cannot help but think about how easy it can be to follow. The fact that it’s not technically a diet, but more of a concept. This helps with the fears of failing or not feeling guilt for indulging in not so healthy foods. Another concept I like about the program is that you do not have to fully dive in. You can choose whether to deep your toes in or jump in fully. I also never thought about the environmental effects of my food selections. The healthier I eat, the more I can contribute to lessen the harm to animals, reduce global warming, and possibly free up more land to grow food for those who need it
